If archers were expected to engage in melee, what did they do with their bows? Surely they must have been personal and also somewhat delicate?
Not as valuable as your life. it would probably be collected when the battle is over

Not that delicate, you just put in on the ground in a big pile.
Go full legolas up in that bitch and blaze through enemy lines, chopping and slicing down enemies left and right untill the bow falls out of your hand because it's so slippery due to the blood of yoir enemies?

this, they would drop it if they had to in order to defend themselves, but even there were holsters and techniques of keeping the bow on your person hands free, such as putting it around yourself
They were mass produced in England, and considered expendable.

Yes, but what about their bows?
>>1182698
Eyewitness accounts state they simply dropped them. Read Enguerrand de Monstrelet or Le baker

>Europeans never figured out Bowcases.
Though I suppose in the case of the longbow thats pretty silly.
>>1182698
One big advantage of a Longbow compared to a compound horsebow is durability. When they're unstrung they're more or less a bow staff. Probably not something you'd want to use a primary melee weapon, but nothing you'd want to get whacked by.
