>le elbow over chair meme
Most underrated Flemish artist IMO.
Bump.
It's strangely sensual, without being pornographic.

It's those warm, meaty colours
If you ever visit Paris you must visit the Rodin museum. His sculptures are special in my opinion, every inch feels like it's rippling with living energy. I've tried sketching these things but they get more complex the more I looked.

How exactly bauhaus is different from Art deco gimmie some pics pls
>>1142670
Both were related to technology and how it could transform lives. Bauhaus was more orientated towards German modernism and le corbusier. It emphasised rationality and tried to embrace everything. It saw mass production as reconcilable with art. It believed that rational design could make lives easier. Art deco had far less lofty goals and from what I know, took inspiration from technological developments but was more concerned with glamour and just looking nice. It was more a decorative movement than an ideological one.
>>1142670
It also took a long time for Bauhaus to create any buildings. As far as architectural movements go I always felt that it was a bit of a disappointment.
Pic related. Pretty much the only building of note that emerged from Bauhaus.
Do you guys like Jeff Koons' work?
>>1142726
>embrace everything.
By this i meant it tried to create furnishings, pottery, architecture...
Deco was far more successful and the designs really have stood the test of time. Whilst Bauhaus looks flat and a bit emotionless after all these years, deco is majestic and glamorous.

I consider him a hack. I've yet to be convinced by anyone that his work is interesting in any way. Just my opinion of course. I'm a traditionalist used to using fairly classical tools of art analysis. I'm sure there's others that would disagree.
>>1142741
No, my art teacher loves him though.

Thank you anons
Feel free to post more examples if you please
Goya's portraits always looked a little derpy to me. I like this one.
P.s. it doesn't look like anyone is interested in discussion so I'm going to just continue to dump what I like.

Goya was fucking based
Bosch was a true master of the insane, the hellish and the mysterious. A painter that continued painting in the mediaeval tradition despite the Renaissance that was influencing everything and everyone around him. Many artists after him attempted to depict hell after him (such as brughel) but all attempts lacked the supremely imaginative, absolutely terrifying style that was all his own.
>>1142917
Love to see this censored penis on that one
Like his humanist patrons, Bosch delighted in judging people by their faces. Evil people were presumed took be ugly whilst good were beautiful. The characatures in this exemplify this idea.
Dutch art buyers delighted in being able to decifer the images and symbols found in paintings. Nothing said 'I'm cultured and intelligent' than being able to explain to your dinner guests what the broken egg shells meant in your painting. However no one is quite sure what the meaning (if there ever was) being many of Bosch's creations.
Claimed self portrait.
What the fuck is happening here.
Followers of Bosch tended to create images of hell that weren't quite as mind bogglingly weird. The inspiration is clear but the execution is prosaic.

There is some debate as to whether the strange buildings in the back ground represent alchemical instruments. They certainly don't resemble any buildings built at the time.
Painted table. Christ is inside the middle of the pupil of a giant eye watching everyone fuck up. The mediaeval idea of life being a wheel of fate is represented here.
What the garden of earthly delights looks like closed. Painting in grey paint (grisaille) was a common motif for triptych panels and the duller outer panels would make the brilliant insides all the more bright and surprising. All the better for amazing the masses on feast days when tryptichs (in churches) would be opened.. Here is a depiction of earth as God created it before the fall.
Another example of supposed alchemical instruments.
Pieter Brughel the elders attempt at depicting hell. Except this is firmly tongue in cheek. Dulle griet was the stereotypical woman who henpecked her husband. Here she is making off with loot whilst a band of formidable women batter the beleaguered denziens of hell. Being henpecked or even cuckolded by your wife was considered fucking hilarious. Dull griet can also be seen in Netherlands proverbs wrapping a demon in cloth.
Brueghel's depiction of hell draws heavy inspiration from Bosch but lacks his imaginative power.

noooo, literally 90% of modern design and architecture is directly descended from the Bauhaus
>>1143001
there are few artists which truly horrify me, but Bosch scares me to my soul. god only knows how 15th century citizens must have reacted to it, not being desensitized by horror films and all

agreed

futurism is the game of thrones of painting

being a hack ie the biggest part of his art. the truth of his work cant be appreciated just by looking at the kitchy objects. it lies within the ways he works and makes those objects
is this good modern art

Awesome, lucky you. I've been to the Prado a bunch of times. I live in Paris myself. There's a couple really nice museums although I think I actual prefer London's art museums. I bought a yearly pass for the musee dorsay which is the best museum here.

>>1144627
Did you see any other museums here?
Thyssen's one of my favourites, so underrated imo. Public now (sort of, they've got a really fascinating arrangement actually, worth reading up on), but all originally owned by a single family. Love the fact that they do both old and new, as opposed to Prado or Reina Sofía (old and new respectively). Amazing to be able to go from Simone Martini up to Dalí in the same building. They also introduced me to the Wyeths. I tend to be into older stuff generally, but I was amazed by that exhibition.

Nice. No I didn't have time. I'm going back to Madrid for a number of days this July so I'll have a chance then .
>>1144660
Well, since being out on the street that time of year is extremely unpleasant for a lot of people, I definitely recommend checking the main museums out.
Unwanted recs:
The big three (Prado, Reina Sofía, Thyssen). Bosch exhibition should be on in July, so hopefully you manage to se that.
CaixaForum is very hit or miss, but if a particular exhibition seems interesting, go for it. Same goes for Telefónica.
Catch a screening at Cine Doré if you're into film. Just go to the cafe if not. Worth seeing imo.
Royal Palace is pretty fogettable, imo. Same for Almudena.
Museo Romántico is pretty cute and tiny.
Are you going anywhere else in Spain?
The MNAC in Barcelona is fantastic.
If you can manage to make a daytrip to Toledo (not far), it's definitely worth it. Greco! (Though we've got some in Prado and Thyssen).
If you're into religious art and sculpture, the Museo de Escultura Policromada of Valladolid is incredible. Not for everyone though.
San Isidoro in León, as well as the cathedral, are my fave. I guarantee you've never seen cuter Romanesque frescoes.
Enjoy!
>>1144679
Cool thanks, just Madrid though. I'll definitely check out the Bosch exhibition.
>>1144590
nothing. just wanted to point out that its not his objects that people appreciate as art but his way of playing around with the art market just like damien hirst does. the pieces are just an empty shell. this shift made it possible for me to enjoy his work since the balloon dogs dont do nothing for me.
>>1144432
>painting
no
>>1144819
That sounds like a cop out to me. I don't see anything interesting about someone fooling people into buying his shit. When I wrote 'so what' I probably should have written 'is that it?'
It seems tremendously shallow to spend a career playing a practical joke.
>>1144924
>I don't see anything interesting about someone fooling people into buying his shit.
maybe because you can't place it in its art historical context
>>1144679
Another Madridfag. the big 3 are great. It might also be worth checking out Museo Sorolla, small but great.
Exhibitions to visit in July would be:
-Fundacion Mapfre
-Caixa Forum
-Fundacion telefonica
-Bernal Espacio
-Museo Nacional de Archeologia
-Naval Museum (if youre into spanish military history it's great, if not then kind of meh)
-Bosch exhibition
>>1144933
Explain. All I see is someone continuing to do what Duchamp started and ended decades ago.

Ay, me siento sucio por haberme olvidado del Sorolla. Hace siglos que no voy, pero es precioso. Gracias, anon.
Let's spice this thread up. Was in London a week ago and went to a large print show, so I'll dump a few of the artists that caught my eye.

koons isn't really duchampian. the global art market is a comparatively recent phenomenon which is something duchamp didn't work in, because there was a different set of artistic concerns when he was alive. also what koons does isn't simple readymades (duchamp did more than this and was far from ending it, e.g. neo-dada, nouveux realistes, pop art, etc. all took it further in a relevant cultural context) -- they're purposely constructed objects and involve advanced technical know-how (and undisclosed means) in order to create. the whole superstar artist thing is pretty interesting; it says a lot about our art world now. personally koons doesn't really interest me (i'm not the anon you were first talking to) but i realise his relevance and i wouldn't be quick to exclude him from a discussion on the contemporary art world

And the artist who really impressed me, Hugo Wilson. Born in 1982, check his stuff out. I prefer his black and white prints to his paintings.
