When you have the medias on your side, you can make anything a big deal.

The President paid to cover up a break in at the Democratic Nat'l Comm Hqtrs at the Waterfate hotel in Wadhington DC.

>tfw Nixon was less crocked than every guy in office since Reagan

Basically Someone broke and entered into the Watergate Hotel to wiretap the Democratic National Commitee. It turned out the people responsible were involved with the Hilariously-acronymed Committee for the Re-Election of the President (CREEP). There was an attempt to cover this up, that failed, then the cover-up became public, there were legal proceedings that almost certainly would have resulted in Nixon being impeached, but he beat them to punch by resigning.

Remember, Nixon didn't get the shaft for watergate, he probably never even knew about watergate at the time it was happening.

He got the shaft for trying to cover it up, and trying to use the CIA to do the dirty work.

In the lead-up to the 1972 election, some guys tried to break into the Watergate building and wiretap it so they could spy on the Democratic leadership. They were caught by the police, and the FBI traced the break-in attempt to people in the pay of Nixon's staff. Nixon won the election by miles, but the FBI claimed that his re-election committee was shady as fuck. Media agreed and began to clamor for more investigation into the Nixon administration. Nixon tried to avoid it by cutting loose the staff who had arranged the break-in, but the Senate decided to investigate the break-in. Recordings of Nixon discussing the matter with his advisers came to light, and Nixon first tried to prevent their release and then released them in edited form. His reputation collapsed. The House began to move to impeach him and even more incriminating recordings came to light. Nixon knew he would be impeached so he resigned rather than be further humiliated. Nobody but a retard in America ever gave credence to any American political figure again.

Wonder how different things would've been if Watergate was never discovered or never happened. It changed the political atmosphere of the country pretty definitively.
>>
Funny how Watergate (when dissected) seems so insignificant in this day and age. Nixon was right about a lot of shit.
>>
Richard Nixon is adorable because he thinks he's people.
>>
He dodged being impeached but he was charged with crimes. He dodged that too because the following president pardoned him.

It introduced common people to the idea of internal political subterfuge.
