This is more of a re-enactment thread, but where do YOU buy your stuff?
Because, i would like to know which vendors to trust. I mean, isn't it pretty much with WW2 stuff that it's produced a lot, but in very varying qualities.
But more specifically, where do you buy your WW1 stuff? Also discussion is welcomed on other periods too. So tell me your recommendations.(also on sources of quality fabrics)
I only do civilian re-enactments, but I buy from other re-enactors and historical costume enthusiasts since it's hard to find companies who care about historical accuracy enough not to cut corners.
Many states have at least one historical re-enactor convention or festival once a year, where you can find vendors selling or advertising themselves. I would recommend checking one out!

Medieval stuff is a dime a dozen, at least in the UK. The Knight Shop and Get Dressed For Battle have a whole ton of stuff.
WW1 stuff is a bit trickier, but I think The Knight Shop do some helmets and a few rifles.

I would say there's quite a lot of 'em made. I mean, the clothing and all has been pretty thoroughly researched.

What period are you looking at? There are patternsome amd books on costuming for most eras. The Medieval Tailors Assistant and The Tudor Tailor (and it's spinoffs) are excellent introductions.

Soldier of Fortune do off the peg WW1 uniforms. There are a few other specialist traders, but unsurprisingly, WW1 is very popular at the moment and their order books are jammed.

the closest would probably be the Costume College event, but it's focused on the actual creation of historical fashion/costumes and not history in general, so the panels and such are related to historical fashion.
Some states and some countries have living history conventions but for the most part they're focused on people selling their stuff rather than events or panels like you'd expect at a convention.

They're known as Soldier of Farbtune but I like them. Decent quality and they look closely enough, though tosspots whine about their stuff being the wrong shade of beige or petty stuff like that.

What Price Glory is pretty good, but it ain't cheap. You can get a Royal Flying Corps "maternity" jacket and jodphurs.
I understood that schipperfabrik made pretty good WW1 clothing but they closed down pretty recently

Without sounding too hipster or obsessive, I try and make all my stuff (unless there are requirements). Sizing on a lot of that stuff seems to favour fatties, or at least, not people of my shape.
But it depends on what you're talking. Like everyone says WW1 style is hard to find. Hell, it's easier to get actual surplus.

Can't think of any I'm familiar with but if Google doesn't yield anything try and get in touch with your local museum, or the nearest reasonably sized museum. Even if they don't have anything relevant themselves the staff will know people who know people. I'd say that's probably your best bet.

Easier to get WWI surplus? Maybe it's just prices here in Canada, but original WWI tunics are running at $1800 or better.
Not that anyone should be wearing original WWI stuff (save maybe a tin hat). Consuming artifacts, and all that. Moths love human grease in their fabric.

Are there any good forums or websites for reenactors? Is there any consensus on what the best store is? I'm looking at the period 1450-1500. The clothing in some of the stores I've looked at looks kinda... cheap. Like half-assed theatre costumes.

Forums died a death after Facebook. "Best" is very, very, subjective and varies wildly depending on what you want.
The well established Eastern European traders are very good on the whole and most of their stuff is made to measure. Historic Enterprises in the US has a good reputation too.

Bloody 'ell! That's madness. I mean, WW1 stuff is always pricier than WW2 kit, but that's absurd.
I do agree about the preservation of artifacts, of course. But the point is that so much of it is just surplus, while we have the real goodies kept safe.
