To be fair, unlike with the other colonial powers, the Congolese really gave them a hand in developing the country.

Not really.
Many times it bastardised local political structure to a weak and powerless form or removed it entirely and put in their own ineffective pawn who thinks only for themselves and do the bare minimum to please the authorities.
Many many colonies had policies that economically retarded the population by cementing them into a poor/manipulative situation by enacting laws that stripped economic interaction and capabilities as well as freedoms.
Honestly, they were all doomed from the start, since it turns out drawing national borders with no regard for local ethnic and cultural heritage is an awful fucking idea.
