Half of Canada is basically a frozen wasteland
>>
there wasnt really any eras of mass migration other than the chinese during the gold rushes, i think

plus, the south was always urban and densely populated and industrial because of the railroad while the north remained sparsely populated and rural

because of the climate
>>
It's because our climate and geography makes most of the land unlivable

Note how nearly all the very successful (on a global scale) nations/societies/countries have been in that same temperate belt.

Some ridiculous amount of the population lives within 100 miles of the US border... it's like 50-75%. They're rich in resources but it's too cold to sustain large settlements of people.

and the main exception, of course, is the areas that are largely landlocked. Having a coast and living in a termperate area is humanity's key to success apparently.

There's not much in Northern Canada and not many people settled in Canada to begin with.

That's not true, there was a period of mass migration to the Prairies during the late 19th/early 20th C.
Hence all the Ukrainians out there

That's true but Canada didn't really encourage mass immigration to the prairie provinces until the the 1890s, giving the US a few decades head start in that respect. It didn't help that a good deal of arable land was until the end of the 19th Century in the hand of companies like Hudson's Bay Company that wasn't particularly looking to settle its lands.
