Let's start a thread about badass saints and stupid saints.
This badass Saint with an axe is Saint Boniface. He chopped down Donar's Oak as a fuck you to the Norse God's. But for some reason, despite being pictured with an axe he's not the Patron Saint of Lumberjacks. That's some asshole named Saint Gummarus who was some noble in a horrible marriage who left his cunt wife and lived as a hermit.

How about Martin of Tours who called down angels hold back a crowd of rustic pagan scum so he could burn down their temple. And then they all saw the glory of God and praised him. well until like most early converts they held onto old superstitions and other idols that hadn't been destroyed by the local saint in the making. post-Constantine Christianity is full of this shit desu. christianity is of meek and mild Jesus indeed
>>
>>1017661
A better one is Saint Guinefort. He's literally a dog that a nobleman left to look after his newborn while he hunted. When he came back the crib was flipped over and the dog was covered in blood, wagging his tale. The noble killed the dog only to pick up the crib to find his baby, unharmed, next to a dead snake. Despite the Vatican's efforts to purge this cult people still venerate Guinefort until the 1930s
>>
So this thread is just where we talk about how people destroyed historical artifacts and destroyed temples?

Sainthood, in the early phases, was mostly earned by being a victim. All the origenal Saints got their status by being killed. It started out as a form of literal victim-worship.

I already gave you the link, the one OP himself mentions in his early posts about the destruction of temples.

And there was also a long history of violence in the name of conversation. There are some reports of Pagans being tortured to the point of death, with the hopes of them converting before they die. The justification being it's better for them to suffer now and convert than go to hell after they die.

This is the logical conclusion for a religion that believes there is no salvation outside it's own church. Of course the story has been updated now and the Pope says atheists and pagans now enter heaven.

That was the later development.

The origenal idea was this. If you were killed by the authorities than you died the same death as Jesus. The religion started out as revering martyrdom, it was not a later development in response to persicuction but a high value since day one.

At the time it was understood that if you died you still don't go to heaven till Jesus returns. However Jesus, the martyr did god to heaven (remember during early Christianity Jesus was not a God but a prophet). So the idea is other martyrs also got to skip the waiting period and would arrive in heaven after their death.

This started the idea that you could pray to a martyr and they would be able to talk to God and put you on good terms. This created the concept of a Saint.

Only later after Christianity went mainstream did the concept of Saints start to broaden and fufill the role of demi-Gods, taking on the same identities as Pagan Gods. For example the saint of travel is very similar in presentation Hermes, the Greek God of travel. In some areas it was more explicit.

Nah, it had nothing to do with Anubis. They just mistakenly translated " Canaanite" into "canine" in Greek, and people were like "hey, we heard rumors of cinocephals in certain parts of the world, so it must show God's grace towards all humans or something" so they ran with the werewolf thing.

Sounds like a pro-Christian propaganda interpretation.

There was a lot of this type of revionism in confrontation of Pagans in order to make it look self-defeating. For instance they tried retelling Ragnarok to make it sound like it actually confirmed Revelations.

A big part of theological warfare is to try to say that the other guy's God suck. Augestine did the same thing to try to make Greek Paganism look bad, saying that the Greek Gods do not defend cities from invaders. Buddihists also made a ton of stories that made the Hindu theology look self-defeating.

Secular people also did the same thing. When an atheist called Napoleon defeated the armies "backed by God" their propaganda used that to point out the Christian God had failed.

Funny enough if you desecrate a holy item today and no God comes down with vengeance no one thinks anything of it.

The point is that it's a lose of a culture and history, it's worst than ISIS because it is our own culture that was destroyed. And many man-made things WERE destroyed by Christian vandals. People that tried to preserve the culture were often killed or tortured.
>>
>>1018881
I'm not saying the contrary, but this one case is nothing to shitpost about. Idiots worship tree, christian dude cuts it off, that's it.
Lots of cultures were destroyed and lost over time by those who dominated and didn't want it to stay, too. Human history is a battle for territory, be it material or cultural.
>>
>>1018922
Idiot Christians worship a guilty criminal. We learn magic isn't real, and the that's it

Religion in general is a dying institution. The phase we are in now is to study what was useful about it and work from there. Frankly, nature worship makes a lot more sense than some of the Christian stuff. Finding ways to celebrate and affirm nature is good for a culture.

This, salvaging of the usful parts of religion, means you need to look at as much as possible: finding what worked and what didn't. For instance Christianity's organized structure was better than the Pagans The general interest in Paganism comes from it offering things that Christianity fails at, for instance a sense of racial unity, Gods that project strength.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christina_the_Astonishing

>Thomas of Cantimpré, then a canon regular who was a professor of theology, wrote a report eight years after her death, based on accounts of those who knew her. Cardinal Jacques de Vitry, who met with her, said that she would throw herself into burning furnaces and there suffered great tortures for extended times, uttering frightful cries, yet coming forth with no sign of burns upon her. In winter she would plunge into the frozen Meuse River for hours and even days and weeks at a time, all the while praying to God and imploring God's mercy. She sometimes allowed herself to be carried by the currents downriver to a mill where the wheel "whirled her round in a manner frightful to behold," yet she never suffered any dislocations or broken bones. She was chased by dogs which bit and tore her flesh. She would run from them into thickets of thorns, and, though covered in blood, she would return with no wound or scar.

St Vladimir of Kiev
10th & 11th Centuries AD

Which saint had hundreds of concubines, multiple wives from around the world, so many children that everyone lost count, and an army of pagans? St Vladimir of Kiev did! Vladimir was the grand prince of Kiev, who converted to Christianity in 988, but before his conversion he was a pretty mean (not to mention profligate) guy. From the start of his reign in 980, he conquered lands, slaughtered people, had children and generally partied hard. On a few occasions he, being a good Pagan, took part in human sacrifices:

“In 983, after another of his military successes, Prince Vladimir and his army thought it necessary to sacrifice human lives to the gods. A lot was cast and it fell on a youth, Ioann by name, the son of a Christian, Fyodor. His father stood firmly against his son being sacrificed to the idols. More than that, he tried to show the pagans the futility of their faith: ‘Your gods are just plain wood: it is here now but it may rot into oblivion tomorrow; your gods neither eat, nor drink, nor talk and are made by human hand from wood; whereas there is only one God — He is worshiped by Greeks and He created heaven and earth; and your gods? They have created nothing, for they have been created themselves; never will I give my son to the devils!’”

Interestingly, it was this speech which caused Vladimir to ponder over the next few years as to whether he ought to convert to Christianity, which he ultimately did. He ruled so kindly after his conversion that he became known as Vladimir the Great – a far cry from his previous life.

Semi-related, in my town square, we have a large tree where we used to hang outlaws. It holds cultural significance because of that, and you better believe I'd be pissed as shit if someone cut it down because they didn't like the history associated with it.

Christianity for the most part tends to preserve objects of other faiths, removing their stigma by separating the foul from the divine. I would've hoped the tree worshiped by the pagans would've been handled the same way (Renvisionsed as a pathway to lead people to the true lord), but in the event that it wasn't possible, cutting it down to convert the people was the only option left.

Compare that to ISIS, who shatters Egyptian artifacts which are no threat to the faith of Islam anymore and there's a big difference.

It's a fucking tree, not a temple painstakingly carved miles deep into the side of a plateau that dates back to 2,300 BC with 70 ft statues flanking the entrance. There's nothing special about a tree.
