I'll dump my folder of historical photos with the hope that more anons will contribute and post theirs. I have to say I do not have a lot of pictures.

Also story time. Pic related is a photo of the liberation of a camp that had a lot of Spanish republicans, most of them veterans from the Spanish Civil War. The camp is Matthausen iirc and the banner reads "The antifascist spaniards salute the liberation forces"

Those Spanish soldiers (and others that were fighting in Africa) later joined the free French army and fought from D Day to the Eagle's nest. They also were the first ally soldiers to enter in Paris. Only around a dozen survived the war. They were highly praised by the French officials (specially Leclerc) because they were one of the few companies that had combat experience.
They were called "La Nueve" because they were the 9th company of Leclerc.

Last one from Spain, this was the day the Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed. I think the picture was taken in Madrid but I'm not quite sure.

This one is by far my favourite picture. He died to send a message of peace, to stop a war. And he felt no pain, he is in absolute control of everything.

If he did, he is a real hero. I read somewhere about monks able to control their nerves in a way that pain is not felt even in extreme situations. There's a documentary of these monks that discovery channel did where they broke a chair in the back of a monk and the monitors that they had on him showed nothing. He could avoid pain. Maybe in a higher state of mind. As a psychologist I'm still getting amazed at what the mind can do

Oh right, my bad. They didn't join the french army after being in a nazi camp but after being in a refugee camp in France. They were given the option of either going to work to the Maginot lane, joining the foreign legion in North Africa, going back to Spain or staying at the camp, and those who stayed would end up in nazi's hands.
