well, i have three displays. bought on the cheap though, so of course they show three different tints. gave up on calibration aftere a while, it's simply impossible to synch the color.

I'm trying to learn how to do these, can anyone give some tips on lighting? How to make shadows/highlights look good, as well as just what tool(s) to use. It helps show how light interacts with the skin while still having that really crisp edge that shows a bit of the topology.
Honestly I should spend allot less time with the soft shading, like here I turned 2-3 shading layers off and it looks almost as good if not better. Dammit.

Agree, it's so airbrushed that it doesn't look natural. But I wasn't aiming for a realistic texture, I was more concerned with highlights/shading.
Compare the "ramps" in pic related for what I mean.
I just find your communication of curvature to be hard to understand, but it's got to the point where I've resigned myself to simply having a different style vs. "who's right".

Keep in mind a lot of this isn't you, I'm just offering to the piece, my critique, so it can be better in time. I'm sure with more effort and time you possess the skills, so please do not be offended by anything I say. With this piece the linework needed to be redone and the sketch lines taken out more bedore coloring. Colors and shading and hues and contrast are all exceptional otherwise.

Colour choice is fine. Shading needs work, looks like your brush setting is too large. Perhaps try colouring a doujin or something to get a feel for how other artists establish light/shadows.
Composition is jarring, since your colour choice is so strong. That's more a difference in taste though. Consider relaxing the hues a little, reign them into a smaller range unless there's a good reason for contrast, ie: drawing attention.

Cel shading, right? That style is usually unconcerned with details like your work, I'd say you're limiting yourself.
Not to refuse praise, but that lighting is only impressive because it's a limited area. If I applied that cheap trick to the whole image it wouldn't be nearly as impressive.

Colouring existing lineart usually ends up being:
50% laying down flats, 45% shading/highlights, 5% effects.
It's harder to pick a convincing/satisfying palette IMO. Then again some people in these threads have gone above my skill level by several orders, I remember a long while back some guy drawing abs in a painter style that blew my mind. I'm just applying basic gradients.

Well I don’t always use the same style, can easily blur my hard shading layers and it’s suddenly “not cellshaded” lol.

You've added details though, which leads me to believe that it's not a suitable style for you, hence limiting.
In regards to what I threw together, you've about summed it up. It's just blurred with luminosity layers. It's not impressive, in a technical sense.
