As roughly 67 percent of the US falls between 85 and 115, and correlating approximates for converting ASVAB scores to IQ come up with a low end average for enlistees of 105 (google military IQ's - there are a number of results .) This would support a higher than average IQ for enlistees - officers tend to score higher on ASVAB, but no numbers can be found for me there. So while 30-60 points higher is unfounded, higher than average is absolutely supported.
