This was him trying to make the movie he talked about making right after the first Avengers, that he wanted it smaller and character driven.
Then, because of his own doing, the first Avengers being awesome, Marvel really takes off at this point. So they come back and want a bigger movie.
The whole movie was Whedon fighting for his soul of what would've been good and what he was being forced to do. I think this is the end result. He probably thought he was doing the best that he could. I don't fault him for it being in there, I fault Marvel.
