Hypnotism is real, it's just a very subtle thing, you can just suggest people do things they'd be open to do in the first place under the right circumstances.
So you can, for instance, hypnotize someone to be more neat and clean stuff up right away because it's easy to override the laziness of "I'll do it later". You can't hypnotize someone to do ridiculous stuff like be a sex slave, obviously.
Unless they were already into slave BDSM stuff, I suppose.

Its not so much a matter of belief as it is knowing how to manipulate behavior. Its much easier to manipulate someone who's playing along and is in to whatever you're doing than to pull off what is basically the brainwashing 90% of this shit portrays.
Not that you can't pull that off, but you basically have to go Josef Fritzl/KGB/CIA on someone, and the second the person you're torturing in to doing what you want gets a mote of freedom, they'll turn on you.
