If the Ukr. govt offered them such authonomy, as federal subjects for instance, they would've undoubtedly put down arms and started talking. But the Ukr. govt was (still is?) making a point of not recognizing them as a negotiating side. Which is a shame.
If Russia _really_ wanted them to join, they would have them by now.

The republics are political experiments. Look at it as a gamble. In the times of chaos, there are always figures who emerge from nowhere, gain power and try to do something with it. Like crystals forming. The people with their worries and desires are an oversaturated solution. The emerging leaders are the points of crystallization. There are many agendas at work, both visible and hidden. I don't _really_ know what's in the heads of those people or Putin or anyone else. I just try to accumulate information and rationalize.

Thats an interesting way to look at it, I'm just not very optimistic about the whole thing. I think way too many Ukrainians and Rebels will die for nothing, and Russia will gather more stolen territory while the world watches and does nothing
