It takes a lot of effort and a knowledge of how human anatomy actually functions. Until you start moving shit around you won't realize all the subtle movements you're actually missing to get a a natural movement. Granted SFM models have their limitations as well depending on the model you use.
Just go download Source Film Maker, get some models and environments and have at it. It'll take you a while to get good. There are a few guides on the net but they aren't that in depth.

I really hate how SFM renders things. Like, unless the animator is very careful with their lighting, it invariably looks like shit. None of the materials are ever rendered in a realistic way, or even a stylistically appropriate one. Skin is always flat diffuse or shiny and slimy looking. The ambient occlusion often adds in REALLY weird looking creases to objects in motion that shouldn't be receiving shadows and doesn't take indirect lighting into account at all. (Case in point: >>8230266 Mistral's face!) It's obvious that they haven't changed their rendering techniques to anything like even a modern game renderer, but nobody seems to care. Even Japanese h-games made in Unity have more cohesive, attractive visuals than a lot of the well-animated, well-implemented SFM vids do.
