Armchair warriors aside, the most striking things about the video to me are:
1) Cops did not make any attempt to retreat once they saw the screwdriver-- they noticed (or should have noticed) a potential weapon, and they stayed inside a range where their guns might not be effective at stopping an attack.
2) Both cops bark orders like.... like over-excited dogs. Probably didn't play much of a factor in this case, but a recurring theme in these videos is that both cops shout orders repeatedly with very little delay. Why do both of them need to be shouting at the subject, and why do they need to say the same thing over and over again? In some other vids the cops don't even shout the same commands, obviously resulting in one or more DBGs (dead black guy). Why don't they have a designated speaker?
Imo, the ultimate way to stop yourself from being attacked is to prevent it in the first place. There's no way to know whether OP's incident could have been prevented, but one struggles to see how the above actions could make things worse.

Sometimes a situation just happens and there isn't much time to debate what is justified or not. Sometimes they make the right choice, sometimes they fuck up and make the wrong choice. Cops are human and will make mistakes. They aren't some kind of infallible force.
Concerning this one video, they were technically in their legal bounds to use force. And yes there is a TON of times the cops should rot in jail for what they did, but I wouldn't say this is one of them.
