Afghanistan is bad about dust and brush, but he's carrying an M249. That's an LMG. That means he serves as his team's base of fire. Considering they've called in A-10 gun runs, that means they know the approximate location of the enemy.
He doesn't need to see a single person. He just needs to know their rough area to suppress. If they couldn't get air support, then he would be doing the exact same thing - while a maneuvering element uses his base of fire to close the distance and flush out/kill whoever they're shooting at with grenades.
Unlike in movies in video games, it's pretty hard to actually shoot someone in the thick of battles. Something like 70%-80% of all kills in firefights are from suppressive fire and grenades.

The great issue here is that they can be both reporters AND enemy fighters. The problems in any war especially one with guerilla and irregular forces is that you can never identify exactly who is and isn't a soldier.
Hell there is a reason why ISIS and rebels in syria all wear civilian clothes, it's because they can drop their weapons start walking around and pretend to be civilians.
It's the great problem with these kinds of wars that you really don't know exactly who is and isn't the enemy anymore. and often times the enemy and civilians are intermingling for the precise reason that the fighters WANT to create international incidents.
