As far as I'm aware, you can release works that feature copyrighted characters as long as it's for free (as it falls under 'fair use' law). What some people do is open a patreon and have backers pay them to produce things, not for anything specific.
It's a weird loophole, but you need to become relatively popular to actually make money off of it.

It doesn't matter how good you are at animating, if your intention is to get noticed fast then focus on lighting instead. The majority of people will not be paying you for your animating expertise, but rather if you animate their particular fetish. It's why pony/futa shit always bring in more, even if the animator themselves is not that great. Also making longer 5 min+ stuff on your own is typically not worth the effort, unless you just copy/paste the same animations over and over again.

This is your best option, as there's a bit of a gap right now in terms of more 'professional' looking vg animations. VLC has lots of problems with webms.
I've noticed that it sometimes skips frames when looping porn. For comparison, I used Windows Media Player with webmdshow-1.0.4.1 and had no such problems.

Custom models are less appealing because they're just another face. Also, they tend to end up looking the same: round face, small nose, big lips, vaguely asian eyes. Custom models are mainly used for fetishes such as inflation.
Like the other anon said, lighting is important. Most animators use lighting to sculpt and emphasize. Volumetrics and post processing give that "classy" look that is currently favoured in SFM. Correct lighting and camera angles also hide poor models and bad animation.
I don't know much on this subject, but doing your own ripping means getting the game and searching through the files or using something like Ninja Ripper. I think gamebanana is the place to look. I might be wrong though.

Honestly, I think trying to "make money" off SFM is a losing endeavor. Considering the sheer amount of free porn everywhere, including the number of people doing free SFM loops (that are actually pretty high quality), convincing people to give you money to do it is pretty difficult.
Generally speaking, you need to have some kind of "thing" that makes you different. There's some animator who is actually kind of shit, but he does beast stuff and he makes a killing on patreon. StudioFOW's 'thing' is adding sound and (generally) high quality animations, along with using rape a lot.
There's also an amount of luck involved; once someone becomes popular, their popularity tends to be a self-sustaining thing. (ie people give noname money because other people are giving noname money).
But I think if you're just getting started, and just wanna make a bit of money as motivation to continue, then just focus on monetizing. Just try to get some eyes on what you're doing.
