Powerpoint for Class

So, I have to do a PowerPoint for a class, and I want to do something more interesting than the default themes.
I just have a total block on what direction I want to go in.
I'm obviously not looking for anybody to walk me through it, I just want some ideas about where I could take it.
The presentation is about a study about homeless mothers and parenting while homeless at a shelter. I dunno, I want it to look sharp, but also reflect the theme. But I also don't want to do anything hackneyed, like fill it with stock photos of sad hobos and worn typefaces.
Ideas?

It's from the opening pages of the first issue of a comic called Annihilator, written by Grant Morrison and with art by Frazer Irving (two of my favorite creators).
Irving is great. If you like this, check out his other work.
I'm sure you can find a bigger version of this page if you find a torrent of the comic or something.

Some interesting ideas in that material. I was at first leaning toward a typography-on-solid-backgrounds approach, but this gives me ideas for how to use text on images. Thanks!
BTW (as you could probably tell already), I'm no graphic designer, just a normie who has a very superficial armchair interest in it and wants things to look as good as possible and not like the shitty powerpoints most people make. I probably don't have the skill to do all this stuff, but even the inspo is great because it pushes me in some good directions and makes the projects that much better. So thanks again!
I do all my presentations in indesign and then save as a pdf. I find its a useful way of working as one can load photoshop / illustrator files for photos and diagrams in nicely, then edit the link if they needs adjusting. Also slide transitions add nothing.
I tend to use minimal text and instead have images which illustrate what i'm talking about. Nothing is worse than just repeating what is written on the slide. You might as well just write a report. The key is to write out what you'll be saying on each slide beforehand and then refer to those notes. Depending on your public speaking ability it can be a script or just notes.
