I personally think your designs are ok for a beginner and can definitely see you being greater with a lot of practice.

i have no idea how else to make him look like the real deal (pic related) without those textures. Also, that's when i learned to apply/create textures so a lot of experimenting is in there.

I used this for reference.
Also, since then i made another character - i think it looks better. Learned to use the 3d effect in this one and also i am really happy with the way her head/face turned out.
I still gotta learn a lot of stuff, but for now i am doing something else instead of characters. Also - thinking about picking up Photoshop as well soon, but i need a tablet for that..and also way more practice than Illustrator.
