It's 3D for sure , it can be done in photoshop but you need great reference images for example the statue (can in in white or black) and then a chrome (you just add color later) or gold skull in the exact same position.

I tried to do something quickly.. meh .. you beter go with 3D

That's actually really good, it might work for what I had in mind (the gold element being something a lot subtler). It'll certainly take less time than taking up 3D modeling (even though I plan on it soon).

From articles and other things I've found since posting the thread, it's implied that he actually builds them, but that's just for the third image, I found the author of the first two on Behance and they're 3D.
