There's an Ellen Lupton book about it but can't find a pdf. I saw an Erik piekermann talk about it recently but it wasn't particuarly in-depth.

So if I'm not traveling to the other side of the world to get a picture of neon Hong Kong street signs at night for a project where it will only be seen in the background but rather just use a photo some other guy uploaded, I'm not a designer anymore?
