Its true that this drives are slow as fuck?
Can someone with the 2/3 TB models post some diskmark?
>>55628074
I only have 4TB to test.
Just stay away from WD and Seagate.
Samsung 950 for comparison.
>>55628288
Not sure how burst was slower than average.
>>55628232
WD acquired HGST so there aren't a lot of options out there.
My recommendation is that buy whatever is on sale, keep it at a stable temperature and don't power cycle it too much. pic related.

Are NAS drives even a real thing or are they just a meme. All I hear is "they are optimized for NAS storage" but when asked how, nobody can explain
>>55628333
It's optimized for low power, high uptime use cases instead of random read/write speeds.
>>55628295
Even if they did the WD branded drives somehow have higher failure rates than HGST drives.
>>55628351
Is there any real world benefit over a normal drive other than slightly lower power bill?
>>55628074
Yeah. In order to fit that much space they use Shingled magnetic recording, or something like that. It results in higher capacities but slower speeds

>>55628458
No, but you shouldn't use these drives for normal use cases.
Lower power user, volume and wear are always nice things to have in a nas server.

Daily reminder that you're likely getting limited by your m.2 slot in this case. The Samsung 950 can yield speeds nearly 3 times as much as that.
You're supposed to raid NAS drives anyway and have a cache SSD for optimizing performance.
If you think NAS drives are like your typical desktop drive then you're doing it wrong.
>>55628295
The HGST drives are still manufactured by HGST.
>>55628458
Yes, it not dying after a year of running it 24/7 in RAID. I work for a NAS company. Desktop class drive failures are super common. Meme drives would be stuff like surveillance class drives.
All I remember is that this brand used to be so bad they called it DEATH star.
>>55629297
This is like 20 years ago though, anon.
HGST fixed their game but kept the deathstar name for some reason

Well no shit.
