Wait, I thought this was some godsent boost for AMD that gave them the edge over NVIDIA's shit. This basically just makes their cards perform as well as they should. The only thing to get out of this seems to be that AMD is performing like shit in OpenGL and OK in Vulkan, while NVIDIA (Maxwell & Pascal at least) is performing normally in both.

I have to. 780Ti user here, bought it over a 970 for 4K survival. The drivers are horrible, crashes on newer drivers, general performance issues. I WOULD buy a fucking 1070 if it was avaiable, but I still don't see ACX versions here in Europe, the current delay says 29th Juli. I'm thinking to skip the 1070 and buy a 1080Ti in the end.

Nividia has been shilling Vulkan as well, they're HEAVILY involved in its development.
The foundation was Mantle, but Mantle could've been supported by nvidia as well, they just didn't because it'd be bad PR because it exposes the fact that without the driver advantage, the performance gap was actually quite small, and they were behind in the price/performance metric.
But with Vulkan, they had support it or be left out, since all AMD did was give Mantle to Khronos Group (the head of is an Nvidia employee)

DX12 has a much faster adoption rate than what DX11 did in the same timefromt from the api's initial release. Hell strictly speaking in the first year of release Mantle saw more games using it than DX11 did in its first year.

even though i own a 1080 i will gladly admit its a horrible value. i just had the money at the time and its currently the best card on the market, even in dx12. if amd had their 1080 counter-part out i would of went with it.
a better comparison would be vs the 1070. that's the stronger contender to dual 480's than the 1080. if dual 480's are on average, consistently faster than a single 1070 then its worth the investment for two. if not, then its not a good value.
from what i can tell from benchmarks its a 50 / 50 between two 480's and a single 1070. most of the big name AAA titles do support multi-gpu's so you do on average get better performance than a single 480.
the issue is most are shown running the old dx11 titles. with dx12 and vulkan the future only time will tell which one is a better value. dual 480's or a single 1070. with the advancements with dx12 and vulkan with multi-gpus, and microsoft two weeks ago creating a new set of standards and tools to make it easier to adapt multi-gpu support in dx12, multi-gpu might end up being more beneficial later on.
at the moment though its up in the air and depends solely on the games you play.
