I figure it was smart enough to determine there's just people and nothing else, so it just colorized that. But I'm curious about the "glow" around them. I assume it's doing more than just assigning color x to pixels of value y across the image.

They've been colorizing films for decades. But it was largely done by hand. The revelation (or attempt) here is they can feed a random image to the computer and it figures out on its own, "this a tree, it should be green. This is sky, it should be blue. This is an Apple, it should be red." Then sometime further down the line it'll be able to determine, "this is an xyz-fish it should be colored in this manner."
