Nah, if you look at the bigger picture at this exact moment in time, the parallel works. If AMD sinks and begins to fizzle out for the last time, the following could happen:
-They slowly sell off all their IP
-They slowly sell off what little assets they have
-They, their IP, and their engineers that they haven't laid off, are gobbled up by some larger company in an increasingly consolidated global economy. This will probably be Samsung. Intel actually doesn't benefit from AMD's outright demise, they're all that's keeping them from being slammed and broken up for having a monopoly.
At this point the barrier of entry is so high for the market sectors they occupy, no one will replace them for a very long time. AMD must survive, things might well become terrible otherwise.
Shame AMD won't fix their drivers, thermal efficiency, or power consumption. They'd rather add MOAR CORES and MOAR VRAM. Nvidia is a shit company with shit practices but their hardware is objectively better

It's when you abuse market power that antitrust action is brought against you. If your competition is shit, it doesn't mean you have to keep them alive under all circumstances. Intel can't acquire AMD but that doesn't mean the gubment will break them up.
