Why is Japan the only country where this type of very small form factor PC is sold?

I don't know, but Japs are top-tier at building small devices in general.

Pic related. It's a rugged 2-in-1 laptop and tablet with a ton of ports. Only for the Japanese market.

Looking for a small 10" screen laptop to install a simple linux distro on. Prefer at least 4gb RAM but I know that is a stretch for most so will settle for 2gb RAM if need be.

protip: don't settle for 2gb ram. Browsers these days usually suck JUST enough ram that having just 2gb will cause a lot of swap/pagefile activity and ruin your day.
>>
>>55575231
Blatantly false. The only machine I have that regularly hits swap has 512MB RAM, 2GB is rather decent for browsing.

Westerners care about experience (computing power they don't need to smooth out demn animashuns, cinematic displays, thin at any cost, art and gaming relevant features beat out shit like good keyboards)

Japs care about work (anything will run emacs, heavy computation is for servers, lots of ports, replaceable battery, if you want art or games you buy a device separate from what you use for work)

Haven't needed or wanted a netbook since I got a smartphone to be honest. Even my Kindle has been left to gather dust since I got Audible. I guess if you wanted to take it easy on your phone battery while on the go, but I already have an rMBP and a few spare batteries for my phone, so I'm not sure where a device like that would fit in OP. I guess it's better not to think too much about what makes the Japanese tick haha.

You can still get old 9" Asus EEEs for cheap in the US (or the older 7" ones but you can't get those with Intel Atom processors). They don't have that good of specs but they work well for shitposting and general browsing if you selectively allow scripts (which is honestly what most people here would use the for anyways). They aren't quite as small as the VAIO P, but they are similar size to/slightly smaller than the Panasonic RZ4 that everyone's talking about in this thread.
>>
Gearbest honestly has the most up to date netbooks in the market today. And that's unfortunate because small windows computers can come in handy.

I found myself super interested in UMPCs around 2008 but the price to performance ratio was never good.

If you're serious about being mobile with your windows the most practical way is an ultra book. Specifically because that has comfort, unlike UMPCs or netbooks. But if you look at these tiny computers and think "this can be a tool" you're in the right mindset and you should check out what these Asian companies are making. Since Intel's cherry trail you will start seeing a new variant of these UMPCs and I think they're going to be extremely useful for a hobbyist.

Fucking disgusting. This is why I peel off every goddamn sticker every time I get a new laptop.
>>
>>55582286
Yeah they are pretty gimped. They are built like a Chinese child's toy too.
I have one with a broken keyboard and left-click button which is a common occurrence apparently.
It didn't work well enough and the screen size is so shitty I didn't bother to fix it.
>>
>>55582306
To extend on that, check out the Gole1. If only it had s built-in keyboard like the Nokia N900 it would be probably the best tiny computer out there, even if it has the chance of breaking or not working 60% of the time, it's a step up from the badass ones from 2006
>>
>>55582286
The trackpads on those things are hellish. I mean, you're not going to find a truly good trackpad on a netbook, but I find eee trackpads especially frustrating.
>>
>>55582286
There was actually a pretty big wave of guys overclocking those fuckers and doing some heavy excel spreadsheet work.
>>
>>55582344
Currently have it set up with i3 instead of openbox like it was in that picture and use the keyboard for as much as possible, it's incredibly comfy when compared to doing anything with the trackpad on that larger laptop. I do have a problem with the trackpad messing up if my fingers are sweaty.

Sadly it looks like they're larger than older netbooks. They don't even list any of the 7" Android models like pic related that I saw a year or two ago so I guess they dropped those instead of updating them. Why have tablets killed off all the cute small laptops without actually providing an alternative (no the shitty flexible keyboard cases available for smaller tablets aren't an alternative)?

I've got that one, or at least one with the same case. Has Windows CE 7. Too small to type on normally, you either have to henpeck or hold it like a big keyboard phone and type with your thumbs
