If you want freedom, get GNU Linux-libre.

I honestly, genuinely, nonironically think Microsoft finally surpassed Linux with Windows 10. I now have zero reasons to use Linux, and I've used Linux almost exclusively since 2002 and contributed to few projects, including KDE.

It finally stole some features from Linux and Mac that it was missing for years.

And it STILL hasn't surpassed either.

If anything, Windows has just gotten worse. Every time I use W10 it's an awful experience. Advertisements in the start menu, advertisements in the lockscreen, "notifications" that are actually just advertisements, notifications for apps I never installed and never use, all of which needs to be disabled manually. Way too much spam. It just feels like I'm using one gigantic piece of malware.

It's pasta but:
Not him but the no games argument is not true anymore. Windows is the best os for gaming mostly due to most game developers are trained into developing for it with microsoft's closed APIs, so the simple process of porting a game that was developed for windows to any other platform will affect negatively the performance of the game. This with the fact that the marketshare is small compared to windows there's hardly an incentive at the moment to optimize for linux, making look as if the platform were worse for games than windows when in fact to flip the situation you'll need to change the idiosyncrasies on the industry itself.

The fact though is that the situation on linux is not nearly the same than two years ago and now those who prefer linux over windows now can play games on it, helping to break the vicious circle, but still there's a lot of things to do for linux to compete in the gaming side. I anyone wants for this to change i recommend to play the games you can on linux when possible and ask for linux ports.

I notice some people doesn't want's for this to happen but if that the case let me ask (not directed specifically to the person i'm replying): how are any of you benefited in a meaningful way with the current situation? because i consider that keeping the statu quo just to have a tool to win an argument on what OS is better is not a meaningful thing. how having less options and practically being locked to MS products benefits you?

I just want to mention it because it is a far underrated project: wine still exist.
I had a friend who wanted to get into mtg, so to test if it would work, I installed the intro game (duals of the planeswalkers), through a steam client through wine.
It just worked, so I gave him that recommendation.
Some times you run into problems, but other times it just works.
A complaint I often hear is microsoft office, which also just works with wine.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>55509082
First, if you set the conditions like that you'll obviously gonna win, let me set more fair conditions: do linux users have a good catalog of games available natively on their platform?
Second, you didn't even got right your argument: civ 5 has a linux native version:

It never fails to amuse me how id tech games are all written using OpenGL but the developers still release them as Windows-only even though the code is literally already portable and cross-platform.

It would probably be a single day's work for a single developer to port it to Linux, yet they don't. Microsoft marketing deal, anyone?
>>
>>55514700
>Microsoft marketing deal, anyone?
It could be, open technologies are more attractive due to not tying you to one platform but i'ts well known that companies like MS or Nvidia needs to pay developers constantly to adopt their exclusive technologies. Valve for example doesn't needs to do this because regardless of if they inject loads of money or not the open technologies will continue to exist because they're used by other parties. This is why i think in the log run probably companies who invest on linux (for example) will win on the long run.

again, you seem to be purposefully ignoring the fact that is related to storing emails and data on microsoft folders such as outlook and onedrive. you think microsoft is going to hand over your gmail or whatever the fuck you use emails?

show the exact part of the statement where that is said. the page groups it by tiers and that exact quote is not in the page, which means it is a subset of a particular statement.

since you obviously have done your research and are not just acting like a /g/ tool, show me exactly where that quote comes from for real context.

i am looking for it myself

Not him but pic related, now the only problem is what microsoft considers as "good faith". It would be easier if microsoft were know as a company with good business practices, the real problem here is their record. Trust them if you want, it's your computer after all.

see >>55516352
>>
>>55516468
okay but we are talking about windows here kiddo
>>
>>55516479
Good faith is a legal term and arguable in court.

MS has no reason to leak personal information

they already have an anonymous method to do that

>>
>>55516502
>>55516493
Just trust them then, there's evidence and there's what microsoft states by themselves, it's clear for me that you completely agree with their terms, so go for it.
>>
>>55516550
the thing is there isn't any actual evidence

and yes, it would be pretty stupid for a company to willfully lie in its TOS
>>
>>55516584
>the thing is there isn't any actual evidence
I'm not referring to evidence of what is transferred to microsoft servers, that's encrypted and only ms knows what's happening there. I'm referring to their known actions in the past and present and what's written on their terms. You already read and analyzed their terms an checked their record and came to your own conclusion that microsoft deserve to be supported according to your interpretation on the evidence. Regarding that there's no more to discuss.

bad news people, if you use any government infrastructure, or your connection passes through, while doing your internet things, you're open for tracking and spied upon. any linux kernel that you didn't compile it yourself is also likewise unsecure.

write your own OS and never connect your computer to any network. you never know what horrors may lie in your motherboard, your bios or your network chip/card. keep it in a faraday cage just in case.
