am I supposed to rip the little plastic part out with pliers or something? I'm at a loss

Looks like that piece in the middle is glued in. Try pulling it out with pliers, or cutting the thin parts with a dremel.

The grease will give it a nice new shiny look, but also create a light protective film that will help prevent dust from building up in the first place.
