Hey guys, I need an educated guess on what might be wrong with my computer...
A few weeks ago it started freezing if I went on the internet using Google chrome, Internet Explorer, or Firefox. It would be fine at first, then just freeze out of nowhere a few minutes in. So I started using an optimizer more often as well as doing a full disk cleanup and it would make the problem go away for a few days, then it would come back, and I'd just do it again.
Now it has been crashing without being on the internet and the optimizer/disk cleanup strategy has become less and less effective. Sometimes it freezes, other times it blue screens and says "Critical process error".
I've been told that it could be a failing hard drive, but before I go ahead and spend money on a new one I'd like to hear other opinions/ideas.
I've read that hard drive problems are usually coincided with loud clicking sounds, which I haven't heard. This is why I'm apprehensive about purchasing a new hard drive without further opinion.

You don't need sounds. My old failing drive never made any special ones.

a) RAM using memtest
b) HDD SMART using gnome-disk-utility
Don't boot into windows when your drive is failing you double nigger.
Data rescue procedure depends on how fucked is your drive. If you are in the US I can only help you if you have a couple of bad sectors.
