Their code is open-source and they're hosted in Switzerland, so I see no reason why there would be backdoors.

Tutanota is great too, it's cheaper and I think Protonmail is still ahead of this (because they've got more money).

It uses Javascript to encrypt and decrypt messages client-side. Also Firefox Nightly has containers, so that won't ever be a problem in the next few months.
