I have a friend who will need a user friendly Linux OS on his laptop that he will use to record instrumental audio. For the most retarded reasons I cannot install Windows 7 so he wants to give Linux a try. I don't know a single thing about music recording but does anyone know any good software for that? Also the most recommended distro will be put on the laptop, just nothing too hard. He is a Winblows fag after all.

I guess Audacity is used for recording a lot, isn't it?

Definitely audacity. It's the most popular recording software on linux by far. I can't even think of another off the top of my head.

As for the OS, definitely ubuntu or a derivative. I would recommend xubuntu, which is just ubuntu, but with the xfce desktop environment, which will be easier to use for someone who's used to windows.

I would normally recommend Mint, but in his case, KDE Neon would probably be best.

Audacity.

ubuntu studio
*ubuntu/mint + kxstudio

Audacity or LMMS

Install Gentoo and force him to learn so he won't be such a cuck asking for help all god damn day.

KDE is the shittest DE. Unstable as fuck and eat resources like a motherfucker. OP, Ubuntu is your answer. I don't use Ubuntu but it's good.

Xubuntu Studio

This, Ubuntu may be mostly shit, but it can be good for productivity.

Audacity is really featureless. Depending on how advanced your needs are (multitrack recording, sound card compatibility, plugins, Etc) I'd say skip audacity and look for a DAW that's Linux compatible. Just search "DAW for Linux"

A sound engineer for a local radio program uses only Audacity (and probably Jack Audio) on OpenSUSE for his work. I'd suggest something less SUSE, however.

Nah, Neon is decent. Don't Blame it on them because Ubuntu was using outdated shit. KDE just has the best software for creating music/videos/images in Linux.
>>
Using Linux to do any serious audio recording is fucking retarded. Unless he just wants to stick a mic into the laptop's integrated audio, don't bother.
