Looking for advice on a portable music player.
I've used my cellphone (note 4) for the last year or so, but recently the size has been bothering me. I'm looking for something small and light-weight but with good enough hardware to play flacs into good IEMs. I'm not expecting the AMP/DAC quality I have with my PC/over-ears (my current IEMs aren't too great) but, I'm looking for something that I can still use when I do get a good pair of in-ears.
Size/portability and expandable memory are the two most important factors. Audio quality is important, but I can't quite break the bank, and I do most of my serious listening on my computer. I'm looking at the ~$100 price range, but I'm willing to spend a bit more if something is exceptionally what I'm looking for.

DAP recomendations?
pic related is what I'm leaning towards now although its larger than ideal. Is their anything ~sandisk sized without being an mp3 player?

Does it play flac? If not then its trash.

I second Fiio products.

I have more expensive X5 II but I've tried out my friend's X1; he bought it after he liked mine but didn't want to spend as much.

They have a great metal build quality and clean audio. If you're at least curious,I highly recommend you research some more and keep the Fiio in your consideration list.

>>
>>55452624
>implying that's a bad thing
>>
>>55452284
Unfortunately, I do not have any experience with the M3. I've only ever tried out Fiio's X series of players.

But from what I've seen, it'll be a lot more plastic than metal, and you'd be sacrificing battery size and audio quality.

My guess would be to check out youtube if you're curious. But my money would go to a Fiio X-whatever

>>55452624
Fiio is a company with a decent track record of good entry-level "audiophile" equipment. I have the X5II and I believe that any better equipment would only be marginally better.

Diminishing returns
>>
>>55452624
Do you know of somthing substantially better without being substantially more expensive?
>>
>>55452624
>Money=audio quality

>>
>>55452717
>Cheap FiiO shit = audiophile quality
Not as hilarious as this one.

Have fun trying to power any cans worth a damn over $150 with anything FiiO.
>>
>>55452733
I have the Beyerdynamic dt 990 250ohm and the Fiio X5 II is just powerful enough to drive them to a maximum volume of just slightly too loud for my ears.

And even then, I wouldn't use my open headphones out in public like a fucking autist. That's what expensive IEM's are for.

If I cared to drive them anymore, I could pair it up with a Fiio Amp. Problem solved.
>>
>>55452773
>volume = audio quality
oh boy
>>
>>55452788
>trying to power any cans worth a damn over $150

I refuted this point to the dot. I never once said volume=audio quality. And even then, that point is moot because the audio quality is already a huge step up from phones, gearbest mp3 players, and other lesser music players.

Nice mental gymnastics you have going

Great for the price. They were my first IEMs so I can't really compare them to anything similar, but they sound incredible for $15. They're fairly neutral sounding, but the bass is definitely there. It's not nigga bass, but it's more than enough to satisfy. Soundstage is okay, but I didn't expect much there anyways. Buy a pair and see how you like them. Worst case scenario, you've only lost $15.

Using this one myself. Music occasionally stutters when playing from am SD card (has been less frequent with the 1.7 update) and doesn't recognise the tags on some of my flacs. I'd wait for the 1.8 update if I were you.
