Is increasing my fan speed a good idea? My gpu is hovering around 84c under heavy load and I'd like to lower that a bit. I don't know what the consequences of an increased fan speed would be though. Except for the noise which I don't mind.

0 consequences, i keep mine on max anyway 24/7 because i plan on keeping the 5850 i have since 2011 for at least 3 more years

I think fan will run out its resources faster that way

This op if anything you should SLOW DOWN your fans to make them last longer

Start by getting proper case in/outtake fans. Remove dust from your card/case. If your monitor is only 60hz, cap the frame rate to 60. If none of those work, then turn make a custom fan profile to ramp up fan speed if it gets to that temp. Don't run it at max 24/7, unless you're willing on paying for an unnecessarily expensive heatsink+fan every now and then.

I'm not going to max them out but I was planning on gradually increasing until I'm comfortable with the temperatures. Or at least find a middle ground.
I've cleaned my case too. It helped but I'm still getting high temperatures from time to time. If you've other methods of improving airflow I'd like to hear them.

Normally I keep everything at max - unless I get autistic and I want to have the noise lowered for a few minutes and for that I click one button.
Noise and added energy use. Fans would also wear out quicker.
Related: I'm a shitter who bought a reference rx 480, and I upped the fan curve a little so that while gaming the gpu temp sits around 80 or 81. Should I up it a little more to stay under 80? Noise means nothing to me

YOu just heat your room faster.
