apply for jobs that arent python? most places have a hard time finding talent anyways so if you write good code they'll just say fuck it and expect you to learn the new language when you start. you should always be learning new shit anyways, if you think youre done learning because you finally graduated you picked the wrong career path
>>

shit with tons of jobs like Java/C#/JavaScript only take a couple days to get productive with if you can already otherwise program
just take a week or 2 to learn something else and apply for non-pyhon jobs

Know your area, understand what is in demand, get a feel for how much competition there is for those positions.

Then specialize accordingly.

If "get a job" is all you care about, then you'll probably want to know java or dotnet, unless you are in san francisco.
>>
>he took a computer course on programming in place of an actual degree

You realise that all the engineers learn c++, python and/or visual basic in their spare time during their degree right?

Unbelievable. Your degree is literally a hobby.

>Go to India
>All those indians took our jerbs

>>
>>55421640
Learn a new language then, shouldn't take you long. I mean, you have no job, so I assume you at least got some spare time. You don't need to be super good at it, you very likely have to work yourself into some weird framework you've never heard of anyway, so it doesn't really matter. You only need to be good enough to wing the interview, after that you'll get into it eventually.
>>
sorry if this was answered already, but how do you specialize in a language at a university?

i'm honestly worried that people these days complain that university didn't prepare them when in reality they just insisted on never being prepared.

python is a vehicle to learning concepts. it's not bad at that, but you need to be capable of reasoning at a higher level than what's right in front of you.

universities might make the wrong bet that you can do that, but you guys all have to admit that they
A) kind of needed to make that bet on everyone who has already been admitted (imagining for a moment that the instructor of CS 101 has no influence on the admissions committee), and
B) probably couldn't have hedged their bets anyway; if you get someone who's literally retarded and can't do abstract reasoning, you can't possibly hold back a class of ~300 just for someone like the OP.
>>
>>55422161
exhibit A in why you should know what you're disparaging - if you out yourself as being clueless, everyone will laugh at what a retard you are
>>
>specialized in Python
That's like saying you specialized in using the breaks rather than driving the whole car

As a software developer, picking up new languages is a part of your life... You're a software engineer, not a python engineer!

C# would be a better pick if you need a job, learn that and learn some framework like ASP.NET MVC and some JavaScript
>>
>>55421640

Python specialist is fine, just add some other stuff:
Get some basics in C or Java. Economy loves the full stack developers..

If you don't have any time for that:
Maybe you should apply at universities, as Django develloper or as tester (testing includes scripting langauges).
>>
>>55427797

Look, there are people that either refuse to learn other languages, or learn just enough to do the task then go back to doing everything in python.

That's better than unis that demand you do everything in java. Well maybe not because then I guess i'd have a job.
>>
>>55427942
Testing is a pretty comfy job if you think about it.

>>
>>55421640
Python shops are decidedly rare in most places, so if that's the biggest issue, you might be able to try another language. Since you already know Python, these should be pretty easy to pick up.

JavaScript is the most marketable language, Ruby has the best paying jobs, and Java has the most stable ones.

If you make cool projects in any language and show them off in interviews, you can generally get work in those languages.

Good luck anon!
>>
>>55421640
Python jobs are so prevalent here in UK, especially London

I got a python job just 4-5 months after learning the language, that's how easy it is to get in

I don't have a degree

I would highly recommend just django instead of wasting brain space on flask, if you really want a job
>>
>>55430023
How so? Doesn't anyone use flask?

Only reason I'd be doing it is because we have a Treehouse account with work, would only be a few hours finishing their flask course before moving on to django, but if its not useful then might as well hit Django straight away
>>
>>55430054
Oh, and incidentally, what kind of salary are you getting, if you don't mind my asking?

Irishfag here, looking to gtfo out of dublin, London is a possibility (brexit or no), a python job there could be nice
>>
>>55430054
>Doesn't anyone use flask?
Professionally? You're somewhat employable if you have flask knowledge, though it's typically because they use Django and have an easier time training up someone with a slight bit of python back-end knowledge

Find a django course. Even if flask could open you up to some good ideas, it's not worth the time learning the micro framework

>>55430075
Only £18k since I'm on probation and working out of London, but full-time in London can net you at least an easy £35k even as a beginner.
>>
>>55430115
Yeah it's cool, there's a django course there too, might priortise that and just do flask after it if I have time or whatever, but I'll focus on getting django right.

35k as a beginner would be pretty sweet, though I'm not sure how far it'll go in London. It's roughly €40k, which would be tasty money for Dublin, but I wonder what it'd be like living in London on that. Hmmm....

Anyway, definitely sounds promising, I'll hit the Django course asap and get it learned. Cheers bro!

Well rent/housing is about 2x as much, if not more, than places outside london, so £800 if you're lucky to £1400 if you're in fulham. At £1400, you have about as much spending money as I do on £18k since my rent is £400. If you can get it cheaper, London is better. Otherwise, London is nice enough to justify being expensive imo

>£800-£1400 a month

€700-800 would be considered high in Dublin by comparison (I pay €700 for an okay apartment in a nice area). Holy fuck.

Well fuck it, beats here anyway. Dublin is actually pretty nice, but I just want to gtfo of here.

Might consider Berlin too. One of the big Asian cities would be amazing, but job-hunting there isn't going well (fuck all online for some reason....but haven't tried django stuff, come to think of it)
>>
>>55430370
Berlin might be nice too. I've heard good things about the atmosphere of european countries, and I believe the annual Djangocon europe is in germany anyway. London is rife with opportunity though, £35k for starters is not bad. What's wrong with dublin anyway?
>>
>>55430398
Dublin's fine, but it's not my home, and there's plenty more of the world out there to see. I studied in Asia for a while, want to get back out and live abroad again before I forget what its like and get stuck here. I'd recommend it if you ever get the chance- expat life is amazing.

Berlin is supposed to be great for tech. I remember it being a nice city, no idea what its like to live there though.

Yeah I'd definitely be happy with anything around €40k atm, I get around €28k now so it'd actually be a big pay increase. I wonder if web dev and software engineering is viable in the long term (we're clearly in a tech bubble), but since I started learning python at work, I've absolutely loved it, a job using it all day would be amazing

>>55422161

As an actual jew, i think what youre looking for is something along the lines of...

For every shekel NOT in goyim, print "oy vey!"

Oy vey is not good, so that would only be uttered in the event a goy doesnt have a shekel to spend
>>
Once you're proficient in one language it's not hard to pick up another. I just got hired as a jr Java dev..haven't touched java in years. Mostly been doing c#, but languages within the same paradigm are easy.
>>
I heared Python like Lego duplo.. is that true?
>>
>>55430932
Doesn't goyim mean non-Jew though? So given the stereotype of Jews being obsessed with money, shekels being in goyim is a bad thing from the Jew's perspective, because every shekel in the hands of goyim is a shekel that the Jew doesn't have.
>>
>>55431000
Interesting take, it makes sense. I was going from the other direction. Jews own everything so they want goys to spend their shekels etc.

I think were describing 2 sides of the same coin, though
