Can a pentium 4 play 1080p video on its own?
I remember I had choppy 1080p playback with my P4, but I didn't know as much about optimizing performance back then. I know it could do it with the aide of a cheap GPU.

>>55402456
Dam, tech sure does advance fast. I can still remember at how excited I was when I bought my GeForce 8800 and now look at it, it can't even beat jewltel integrated graphics of today.
>>55402713
not really nearly as far as it used to though, the 3.8 GHz P4 can probably still run a lot of 2016 software without issue, definitely couldn't say the same of a Pentium 133 when that chip was new
>>55402712
I had a 64 bit P4 with hyperthreading and it could not play 1080p youtube videos without stuttering.
>>55402822
that's because YT's player is inefficient garbage, you get far better performance redirecting video to an external player
>>55402859
Yeah, I could play downloaded youtube videos through mpc-hc and get a lot better performance, but anything with a higher bitrate than yt would still stutter.
With GPU acceleration I was able to play a little better things.

But how do the new Atoms compare? If you're going to use weaker hardware you might as well use something smaller and cuter instead of a full tower.

No, currently using Pentium 4 631 and it sucks. Youtube lags, x264 when i multi task, dont even wanna talk about 1080p or x265.

If you're limiting yourself to an old "real computer" that the SBC may run just as well as then what's the difference?

For real though, fuck SBCs. Ugly garbage, and if I cared that much about saving two cents on my power bill I would just buy a low-end notebook with long battery life and charge it at a coffee shop.
I use a Pentium D @ 3GHz with 2GB of DDR2 running Debian/Windows 7. Still gets on the internet and I added a $20 nvidia geforce 520 with 1GB of video RAM to play HD videos.
>>55402456
Yeah. It will run AutoCAD or inventor just fine.
>>55402456
what about kvm?
>>55402598
Computer parts are so completely cheap nowadays that there is no reason to use a Pentium 4 unless you are a faggot.
You can buy a Core2Quad for like 10 bucks. Get an LGA775 board on ebay for 30 bucks and 4gb of ddr2 800 or 1066 for like 20 bucks and for $60 or so you have a much much better computer for almost nothing.
>>55404482
I don't really see C2Qs that often, but even at $50 it's still true if you're just looking for the best that you can get.
I still like and enjoy my farm of space heaters though, and there's nothing you can do about it.

P4 Expensive Edition owner here.
All you need to know:
>865G chipset is SATA 1 ONLY
>AGP graphics cards are shit
PCI graphics cards can decode 1080 but fuck that
There exists out there a 945G board that has socket 478, they show up on ebay for next to nothing now. they also have PCIe and DDR2-667 support. I'm sure with some RAM overclocking one could get it close to 1:1 with the P4. it would probably be an interesting experience to see what a P4 could do with such a board.
now, that being said, a P4 cannot game well. if you want to play older titles, maybe.
but here I tell you this: Netburst is slow, Netburst is NOT energy-efficient, but goddamn does it scream reliable if you don't have a cucked cap plague board.
I had to replace the hard drive with an SSD in a late-model P4 box, that ran a building's door security system. we bought a couple spares of the same motherboard in case anything ever happened, and all of them were low-ESR poly caps. the original board is still on electrolytics and has been running for 8 years now, chugging along, even faster with the SSD. never writes to it, just runs the lock system from RAM.
>>55408567
I think what you want is more of a 2W TDP quadcore Atom Z3700 series CPU. Z3735F at the least, up to the 1.83 variant I can't remember the number of off the top of my head.
