I have a MacBook Pro and the hard drive crashed. I do not have any installation cd's, where can I download software so I can reload from a flash drive

Download it from the App Store in your purchase history. You really should keep the Install OS X.app around for this reason.

just go into recovery mode it will connect to wifi or ethernet and then pull down the recovery program and download the os for reinstall

Download the installer from the Mac App Store and use it to make a bootable USB drive.

If the OS version you need is pre-Lion, then use a decent torrent with an original unmodified DMG.

Yes, but you can't make bootable media with it. Think you might be able to burn it to a DVD if you have an external drive or a capable model.
