What is CentOS?

Yes, called evaluation or something like that. You need a non-commercial email adress though. I used my universities email adress to get it. I could probably upload it somewhere.

Yeah, it's called "Windows Server"

Yes - they have a "developer edition" that you can use for gratis now.

Google it.

Fedora is not RedHat. Fedora is a fork of RedHat with a base installation and repositories that were carefully designed to rather meet the needs of desktop computers. Compared to RedHat, Fedora has a lot less preloaded software, but its repository has a lot more software meant to meet specific desktop user cases. It's also bleeding edge as fuck. It's already at version 23 for RedHat 7.

Anyway, CentOS is what OP is looking for.

RedHat is freem you can download it off their servers for free. What costs money, however, is the support they provide.

so where can I download it?
do I just get the evaluation version and then they don't do jack shit?

CentOS is binary-compatible with RHEL. The company I work for builds their software on RHEL/CentOS and installs on either, no problem. Those are the only suppported platforms, so unless your IA/IT rules require as paid-for OS, use CentOS.

You can think of Fedora as Redhat beta. They implement Redhat as Fedora about two years in advance. This gives them time to work through the Fedora problems and the result is a fairly stable Redhat system that's suitable for the enterprise desktop.
