As long as it is USB 3.0 and is at least 7200 RPM, it should be fine with video storage and playback. Just make sure you back up your videos in other places as external hard drives fail more often than internal hard drives.

There is the option of purchasing an internal HDD and then buying an enclosure for it, but those cases tend to be of cheaper quality; especially so in regards to the ports.

I do not recommend it. I did this back in December. It is June and I can see my external dying in front of my eyes, I open a video and it stutters, plays for a minute, then stops again. I literally need to let the video buffer.
It's also starting to run hot as hell, portable externals suck dick.

You people have no idea of what you're talking about. A USB3.0 is more than fine for video storage and playback. Most Blu-Rays and high quality 4k/1080p encodes do not exceed 40MBits. USB3.0 is plenty enough already, something like Thunderbolt is nice but not at all necessary unless we're talking about video editing/encoding.
