I've never bought a gaming laptop before, but I've now suddenly got a lot of cash to burn, and I'm considering getting this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834154240

The specs look pretty decent for the price, and I've heard good things about MSI, even from people I know IRL. I don't care that it's heavy or big, it's not an issue for me, all I want is something that has really good internals, a nice screen, and it's at or under $1,000. My only problem with it is that it's W10, but I could easily replace that.

Would you recommend me to buy a T100TA? I found some of these for 85 €. I'm thinking of getting one, purge Windows 10 and install Ubuntu. These won't run games, but it should be a nice portable and transformable shitposting and browser device.

They are bad value proposition. Shitty at being portable with regards to battery life and heat (which is the point of a laptop), and barely-adequate specs for gaming.

11in MBA.
It's okay. Could have done better, but eh. It's a comfy machine to use.

running Windows on it is only a mild pain (battery life halves though, goes from 12 hours to 6)
and OSX is kind of nice, I guess (battery lasts for ages, Renoise has significantly less audio latency, but a bunch of the shit (VSTs in particular) I want to run is Windows only, so I mainly ended up booting Windows, mostly been treating OSX as a battery saver mode than anything)
doesn't help that I do a lot in C# -- was fucking around with Mono on OSX recently, it's shit
and Xamarin Studio's GTK UI builder felt like it was broken (menus didn't stay up/would disappear when you moused over them, layout elements freaked out, had two crashes before I gave up)

super portable though -- don't really care about how thin it is, but it's 11in and gets decent battery and does whatever I throw at it, it's not like you need more than an i5 if you're not gaming or doing massive compiles regularly
biggest issue is that under any kind of extended load, it gets hot as fuck (eg, format encoding (mostly webms and mp3s) or long compiles (building Wine on OSX), that sort of thing)
also, battery life goes to hell (can go down to like 2-3 hours under long heavy loads on Windows, 4-5 hours on OSX)

My dad bought me an HP laptop in 2003?, then I bought a Qosmio in 2006? I got Name brand punched.

20010-11? Purchased First Generation Dell XPS 13 inch with Geforce 9500, Overpaid had it Rushed! 4100-4400$?
I took it everywhere.

that XPS left a solid burn mark on my right leg, sold it 5-8? months later.

Did ASUS 72 480 Nvidia laptop thing, was 20 pounds, bags where 200 bucks, sold that to.

2011-2?, Lenovo 350 ULV laptop right before IBM sold Lenovo to the Chinese.
I LOVED IT!
like real 7 hours of battery life, AMD fanboy was like, RIP AMD

Finally learned my lesson and went to HP.

I cannot remember the model but I remember it was a quad core AMD machine and some MXM 75 watt GPU (it was honestly shit, but I wanted AMD) (2013-14?)

Then I ordered a backup system, ultra cheep and Gave that to my mother.

2014 It was http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Kaveri-FX-7500-Notebook-Processor.117332.0.html I dont remember, Bros! 7500 is Neat, but the touchpad was Kill at zero dollars.

HP called me and said sorry and was on Christmas 2016 called me and said we cannot fix this, Take this FX8800 sir? You are a loyal customer? ( I am Jumping up and down ).

HP Stream 13. Broadcom WiFi/BT chipset was a nightmare to get working solidly on Linux but it's good now. Same battery life versus Windows without any tweaking required. Poor thing was struggling hard on W10.

HP dv6 quad edition, 2011
it's a miracle that it's still running, one of the fans failed, and the fans go on overdrive for basic tasks. battery life is 45 min. at best. besides the hard drive being sluggish it performs fine. never buying a quad core laptop again
>>
I'm thinking of splurging on an XPS 15, but ain't sure whether 4k is a meme and something I require for future proofing...
>>
>>55386631
>never buying a quad core laptop again
You should be saying "never buying an HP laptop again". Quad core is fine if the cooling is done decently. But HP can't cool shit apart from EliteBooks and such, they always end up with some sort of heat problems.

I've got a quad core i7 chinkpad. It works great and gets 10 hours from its 100 Wh battery doing normal things, a good bit less if I'm playing a game, rendering things, etc.

ASUS ROG GL552VW-DH74 15-Inch laptop.

It's a good sidekick to my primary rig, especially since I only paid about 800 USD when it was on sale.

The only problem is that it came with a weak-ass gtx 960m, but to compensate for that I use this weird external graphics card adapter I bought off of amazon. The model of laptop I purchased has two mpcie ports (one is meant for additional storage I think), so I just plug the adapter through there and run my older 970 on my laptop.

That makes it a nice "portable" rig for when I feel like playing at a friends place or on campus before night classes.

I am looking for a laptop with:
- panel with a great color reproduction (ips, Adobe..) and 4k resolution
- 4x DDR 4 sockets
- 2x m2
- i7 cpu or higher
- preferably business class build quality but with non pro GPU
- good keyboard
- nipple

I have been looking P50 and P70, but i would prefer them having non Pro GPU.

I will use this laptop for my work.

Toshiba Chromebook 2. Cost me $280 and it shit stomps my T420 in regards to screen quality, battery life, and portability. Since buying, I haven't had need of my T420 at all. Get 12+ hours battery life off a single charge. Only 3 cell battery too.

While ChromeOS is rather limited, I found a way to connect to Windows shares over the network do no issues since then. That and I found I could replace the 16GB m.2 ssd that's inside with a 128GB for $40.
>>
>>55396500
this actually isn't a shitpost. as someone with a rMBP 13 and the topend XPS 13 2015 model, I find myself using my Toshiba chromebook when I just want to hop online and do research without bothering with anything else. its really excellent and the battery is a predictable 8-9 hours for reals
>>
>>55396538
Honestly im hard pressed to find a laptop with
>1080p screen
>m.2 ssd
>killer battery life

For the price I paid for my Chromebook. Added a 128GB microSD card and I'm golden. Granted it's only a Celeron dual core compared to the i7-2620m in my T420, hence the battery life. But I found I'm not doing anything super intensive on the go. Got my 6700k/980ti desktop at home for the heavy lifting.

80% of my normal work is done in salesforce or online configuration portals; only corporate IM and virtualization jobs really make me carry the XPS when I think hard about it. the vast majority of people's jobs can all be done within a web browser these days, people just aren't comfortable admitting it.

I spent 30 minutes installing an arcane series of drivers to get the USB-C dock working for this XPS just now... not sure why I even bothered. for the cost of that dock I could've gotten 2/3 of a chromebook
