Well clearly Linus WANTED to make Linux open source. But okay let's say that idea didn't exist so he never thought of it. Then as you say he would have just sold it to e.g. Apple and made an arse load of cash.

What I value about Linus is that he appears to be a fully functional, confident human. He has lots of personality, charisma, seems balanced, has a family and other interests and hobbies apart from computers.
People like RMS for example on the other hand are in my opinion even destructive for the public perception of free software. If GNU had a more charismatic, less insanely idealistic face, that would be a major step forward. What this project needs is someone who implies that free software is actually usable and can be integrated into real life. What Stallman on the other hand implies is that free software lives in some dream land that is not compatible with other interests.
So while his work objectively has tremendous value, everything that came with, the whole idealistic bullshit and appearance is pretty much poisonous and set a direction of the free software community that I personally think is absolutely ridiculous.
RMS and Linus would be nothing without this man.

I don't know if I have any particular tech idols. Maybe Elon Musk. He's probably the ideal billionaire in my mind. Doesn't squander his wealth, and uses it to do crazy things that people without wealth can't, when those things might benefit all of mankind.
Probably the closest runner ups would be the OpenBSD devs. I don't particularly look up to them, but they're probably the only people I unreservedly trust in regards to security.
