I just decided to test if the talk that nvidia gimps there old gpus is real,
test my trusty 670gtx, against 2generation younger 960gtx. You would get that 960gtx destroyest 670gtx, but compared to average results, it actually stood the test of time.

nvidia's GPUs are reliant on their drivers, without them they are garbage
as soon as the next gen of GPUs is out nvidia starts gimping the drivers of the older cards, so going back to a release driver wouldn't really achieve anything
