I recently purchased an ibook G4 1.33 GHz. Does anyone have any recommends for what to use it for? I enjoy it I just cannot think of a way to use it.

>in b4 run xbuntu
>>
run debian or some ancient version of OS X
>>
>>55329976
why the shit did you buy one if you had no idea what to do with it???

go on the macintosh garden and find some shit for it, run tiger on it instead of leopard for better compatibility
>>
You can't run Xubuntu, it doesn't have PPC builds. If I remember correctly, Mint does so you can start there. Your other alternative is to use a horrifyingly outdated and insecure version of OSX.

All that said, it's a piece of junk and you wasted your money. I worked on squeezing more life out of iBooks a while back and there's not much you can do. At best it's going to be a subpar Chromebook that isn't powerful enough to play YouTube.
>>
>>55330255
It can play YouTube, just not Flash
>>
>>55330255
>horrifyingly outdated and insecure version of OSX.
There's nothing wrong with using Tiger in a non-server role, especially with TenFourFox.
>>
>>55329976
I tried to boot with USB on the powerbook variant and it went horribly.
Hope you still have a CD burner lying around.
>>
>>55329976
I would say install OS9 and be comfy, but you cant because its just a bit too new.

t. Powerbook G4 fag

Have some spec listings. http://apple-history.com/ibook_g4_mid_05 Yours might be the late 04 one though, they both had 1.33 ghz options.
>>
Dualboot Leopard and OpenBSD
>>
>>55329976
Maybe if you get a few more you could use them as a foot rest, step stool or exercise stepper. It might make a decent paper plate rest.
>>
>>55330400
They support classic mode though
>>
>>55330400
I thought only G5s couldn't run Mac OS 9
>>
>>55330505
I was talking about straight up installing it, some stuff doesnt play nicely with classic mode.
>>
>>55330505
>>55330531
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_9#Compatibility
Not for the 1.33 model it appears. Classic only.
>>
>>55330288
Nope. It can technically show a YouTube video via HTML5, but not at a watchable framerate. Even 360p videos will be slideshows.
>>
>>55329976
here's some general advice
1. don't install Leopard. 2 slow.
2. TenFourFox
3. pure-mac.com has a lot of older Mac software.
4. if you want to try something interesting, try MorphOS
>>
>>55330748
PPC Macs past around the 1 GHz mark can handle 360p just fine, probably 720 too if you pipe it through to an external media player.

There's some guy around here who dailies a 1.42 GHz PowerBook and has no problem handling YouTube either.
>>

yyy
>>
>>55330748
You just need to use a video player for playing videos. VLC still officially supports PowerPC OS X so I just use that but I'm sure you can install mpv and others via Tigerbrew or just compiling from source

>>55331017
I'd still be rocking my 1.5GHz PowerBook if the battery wasn't kill. I do use a dp 2GHz PowerMac G5 daily and a 1.25GHz eMac regularly
>>

>i purchased an old laptop. what should i do with it?
congratulate yourself on your pointless purchase, i guess.
>>
>>55330288
my main laptop was a g4 titanium for a while, it couldn't play youtube in browser, but if I entered the URL's into this player I don't remember the name of, they played fine.

>>
>>55329976
Play old Mac games through Classic mode

Warcraft I/II, Starcraft I, Diablo I/II, Marathon, Myth, and tons of others should play like a charm
>>
>>55331969
I really like it. I love the iMac G3 being a CRT AIO but with the eMac it's high enough res to play HD content and still 4:3 so my older media works well too, plus the G4e CPU is a nice spec bump over my iMac's 500MHz G3

I mainly use it as a bedside HTPC

Yeah, it can play 360p in an external player, but that's besides the point. It will struggle with 480p and simply can't do 720p.

I don't see the point when even the shittiest bootleg tablet will perform better.
>>
My original intention was to install tor on it to access the dark web. But the older release of tor I used to install with 10.8.5 I couldn't get to launch.
>>
>>55332166
Dumbass, I'm speaking from experience, you're speaking from speculation. 480p works fine and I haven't tried 720p content as I've yet to upgrade my PowerBook's screen to a resolution where 720p would make sense
>>
>>55329976
shitposting terminal mainly
use 10.4, install OS9 in classic

kind of want to pick up an old iBook G4 for this exact purpose
used to have a G3, the super unreliable white one (mine lasted ages, but my brother's wife probably got it repaired before he gave it to me, had a nonstandard 192MB of RAM in it, too -- ran 10.4 a bit slowly, but well enough to use)
>>
>>55332187
You could just play the 720p content as a test..
>>
>>55332229
I doubt that'd go well. Mine's running OpenBSD with no GPU driver

I have the flagship 2002 model (+ 4 others)

The design is very nice, functionally and aesthetically, the adjustable arm is fucking genius and makes it very easy to comfortably position the display wherever you need it. Performance-wise, it's not spectacular, PC133 SDRAM wasn't a totally retarded decision at the time but in hindsight, what in the fuck were they thinking?

At least they're built like fucking tanks, I just kicked one off of a table by accident the other day and it fell on the wooden floor of my storage shed panel-first, not a scratch on it and booted just fine.
>>
>>55332187
No, it's not speculation. I personally installed Mint PPC on an iBooks G4 and it wasn't able to run shit because hardware acceleration doesn't work. You can run Tiger and you may be able to squeeze more performance out of it, but that's not worth it at all unless you are ultrapoorfag.
>>

>>
>>55332309

why would anybody be actively targeting holes in an OS released over a decade ago that makes up 0.001% of the OS X userbase on a good day? It's not like targeting XP or something where you'll still catch huge numbers of old codgers and poorfags

learn to use a firewall, learn to disable unnecessary or potentially compromised services, basically, learn to use a computer, and you'll be fine

unless you've really pissed somebody off, nobody's going to be sitting on their ass autistically crafting special websites and packets just to attack an obscure exploit that applies to literally less than a quarter of a percent of the world's networked systems

don't really give a fuck, I was never trying to claim it was secure in the first place, I was just calling out your dumbshit apocalyptic FUD

besides, your "bored chinaman" scenario is so improbable in the first place, and can be pretty easily avoided not only by once again firewalling your shit and using common sense on the internet but also blocking scripts and user agent spoofing

the majority of security breaches are user-authorized in one way or another, stop grasping at straws and trying to act like a security expert regurgitating FUD from clickbait sites and wiki pages, the funny thing is that I bet half of you shitters are swiss cheese yourselves anyway and haven't even taken basic security precautions like disabling unused services, or even worse, you're wintards

Moving the goalposts? For someone straw Manning that hard you're not one to claim fallacies.

I actually take security seriously. If you're willing to run an ancient times, unpatched OS, have fun. But you're an idiot. Of course, you most likely don't actually leave the house or do anything important on your iBook

where? "I bet you're a hypocrite" is not a strawman, nor the central point of my post, even if this claim is fallacious, my argument doesn't budge because it doesn't hinge on it
