Let's sum it up:

*Costs more than a non-reference GTX 970 (Europe here) despite having significantly worse performance (except in selected DX12 titles)
*Despite 14nm still same efficiency as old 28nm 970s
*Violates PCIe specification due to too high power draw from the slot
*Literally no overclock headroom
*Extremely cheap cooler who makes the card run hot AND is somewhat loud

Nvidias 970 is a fucking two years old gimped cripple card and it is still a clearly better choice than the 480.

WHAT
THE
FUCK
AMD.

inb4
>hurr durr 480 is much more future proof due to 8GB and async compute
The 480 can't even handle game settings which push VRAM over 4GB. It's just like these snakeoil shitcards like the GT 730 with 4GB. Do you think that card is also more futureproof?

I really hope the custom designs will fix these issues, otherwise the graphics card market is still fucked.
>>
>>55328831
I was about to sell my 380 to get the 480 but now that I've seen what this card does I think its better to stay with my card and wait for vega.

>>
>>55328831

don't amd memecards take a year or so to shit on older Nvidia cards?

The 380 now destroys the 960. The 480 will eventually do the same with the 970.

If anything it's the 390 and 390x that suck hardcore.
>>
>>55328831
>Europe price
Irrelevant
>Efficiency
Semi-relevant, but the efficiency data was mainly coming from 390->480, which the target was met.
>Violates PCIe specs
Currently under investigation because this is not the intended power consumption target.
>OC
With reference to the above, OC is limited due to the current issue under investigation
>cooler
Runs perfectly fine and is quiet enough in normal load.

Also, you're dumb.

Hey there, I'm not biased at all (I own a graphics card) but I'd advise you to always buy Nvidiaâ„¢, because Nvidiaâ„¢ runs faster, cooler, and gives more frames and GHz when overclocked. Nvidiaâ„¢ let's me play games The Way it's Meant to be Played, and with Nvidia's innovative GameWorksâ„¢ development framework powering over 90% of up and coming titles this year, you'd be a fool to even consider a card from an inferior company. I could talk to you about drivers (amd has none, not one driver) but you're probably already sold by now. Buy any Nvidiaâ„¢ card at any price point and you will NOT be disappointed!

If you actually read what's going on, the card isn't actually drawing that extra power from the slot. It can't do that, and even if it could, it would still prefer PSU power and overdraw the PSU cables first. A 6-pin PCIe connector is rated at 75W but can safely deliver 120W or more. There is no way to accurately measure the power pushed through the PCI slot itself. People are talking about a riser adapter... If it were that easy, don't you think more reviewers would at least try to do these precise measurements? Well they don't, because it's not that easy.

The extra power is being drawn through the 6-pin connector, not the motherboard. Every card on the market that overdraws does it through its PSU connectors, or we would have blown motherboards left right and centre.

Inb4
>oh, it's DIFFERENT this time, the 480 is BROKEN

No, it's not different. The PCIe slot is literally incapable of supplying enough wattage to cause damage to the motherboard.

Your PSU is what COULD sustain damage, and is much more robustly built, so relax.

Well, NVIDIA managed to completely crush every single card on power consumption, performance AND price. AMD managed to be on par with 970 and so late that the price are almost identical already.

I'm usually trying to believe on AMD, but this is very bad for them. If 970 had 4gb nvidia wouldn't even need to make a 1060.

The good thing for AMD is that they still have the consoles.

Power consumption and performance are only hold true for higher-end tiers.

It is far less clear with pricing as you have previous generation parts competing against new generation stuff.

Frankly, 480 is the sorely needed game changer in the lackluster $199-$249 range.
>>
>>55330503
The problem is that you're comparing a brand new card to a 2-year old card.

If both cards were released at the same time you would have merit, however saying there's a a ~$100 difference so the 480 is better is just stupid. The 480 is current generation while the 970 is last generation.

Paying ~$330 for a card 2 years that still beats or is on-par with a literally just released card that retails for ~$230 is a pretty good investment.

You can't compare GPUs to CPUs.
>>
>>55330701
the 480 costs $350 hands-down cash
no non-tax bullshit
this is how much if fucking costs
meanwhile, the 1080 costs $1000

>>
The 970 is dead in the water, Sure you might be able to get one cheaper than a 480. But it's missing .5GB of memory and the 8GB 480 is probably the better buy in that regard anyhow. But think about this. The drivers for the 970 are 'mature'. They are unlikely to give anymore performance boosts in the coming months. The 480 like many other AMD card tend to improve with age. Expect some games to get a boost later on and when it comes to DX12, depsite there not being many of them right now for those that are out and will eventually come out it's a win win. The drivers performance in DX12 can only get better on that too. VR? Fuck VR it's just a marketing tool. Until we get sub $200 VR headsets that are not complete shit it's just another gimmick anyhow. Let those richfags piss their cash away on that pipedream.

Investing in a 970 right now unless you get it for AT LEAST $50 less than a 4Gb 480 is a waste. Better to invest a little more in a third party 480 when they arrive.

For those wanting to upgrade from a 290/390/970 however it may not be worth it. But it really depends on your needs/wants and available cash. If you can afford it get a 1070 (if you can find one at an affordable price) if upgrading from those cards.

>>55330733
>they should fucking price the 970 accordingly then and it would stop being a comparison. 30% price reduction of they ever want to sell another 970

are you retarded or something? nvidia don't even need to sell another 970. 970 production stopped a long time ago and all the remaining 970's are just old stock. they have the 1070 to replace the 970 now and the 970's time has gone. the 1060 will be the new card that will be compared to the 480, not the old 970.

use your brain for once.

They don't want to sell another 970. Retailers might want to get rid of old stock, but they probably don't care and Nvidia sure doesn't care.

The focus is now completely on the 10 series. The 9 series is out of the picture.

Anyone who buys a last-generation card is pretty dumb. You should always shoot for a current generation card when buying new.
