Comcast has been charging me $10/month to rent a modem so I decided to buy a ARRIS SURFboard SB6141. While I'm at it, should I upgrade my wireless router? Currently I'm using a Linksys WRT54G2 that I bought in 2008, and it's worked fine for me. Do I need to upgrade or not?

That thing is a piece of shit but if it works fine for you I don't understand why you would upgrade it.

It works fine in the house but I'd like to have a stronger signal out in my garage that's ~50 feet away from the router.

Buy a cheap access point and run Cat5 out to it.

I'm 99% certain that Comcast requires you to use their shitty proprietary modem.

You're 100% wrong, though there is a compatibility list.
