the word "drugs" is often often used for medicine too, so that you might want to consider. Though I did just make a comparison to the german word "Drogen", in which we usually dont use it for medicine, and the results seem to be pretty much the same in.

but just look at when it has risen in german books compared to english books and check the early < 1900's out
