Out of pure curiosity, Have any of you received a letter from your ISP complaining about you torrenting Japanese cartoons?

Never have.

I thought I would after japan started taking a proactive approach to enforcing their intellectual property in the united states, but I only watch things that have zero chance of ever being localized in the united states, such as yuru yuri.

No.
The US ISP providers don't seem to care. I know Viz and Funimation started a manhunt a few years ago, but it quickly dwindled and I haven't herd much from them since.

Seems you'll only get a notice for downloading porn or Hollywood made films here in the US.

Now importing Jap goods into the US is something you really have to do your research on, otherwise you risk being labeled a pedo and could possibly see yourself doing some time behind bars.

Japan only cares about Japanese consumers. As long as the Japanese consumer base doesn't start watching fan subs and stuff and stealing their DVD/B-Ray bucks they don't care.
Which is why they've been cracking down on some fansubbers and hosting sites. A growing number of Japanese were watching and downloading raws instead of buying the disks. The heat seems to have died down though.
>>
>>55255098
Is that why they DDOSd nyaa and horriblesubs for 2 weeks solid back in 2014?
>>
What's a country with fast internet and a government that doesn't care about piracy?
I'm considering moving.

>>
The American weeb market isn't as big as you would think, so they couldn't care less.
>>
>>55255116

Nyaa still gets DDoS'd sometimes.
I do think they're behind it though. Them or the western affiliates.
>>
>>55255023
That enforcement only seems to target streaming sites and basic file hosting sites these days.
I remember the initial panic that happened when it first happened, but things have been going very smooth since then.

The enforcement was more of a crackdown on Jap citizens than is was on foreign ones - tried to keep them from getting content for free. Afterall it's their citizens that make them the money, they don't consider anything outside of Japan profitable thus they ignore us.
>>
>>55255164

>>55255208
>they don't consider anything outside of Japan profitable thus they ignore us.

That's totally why they ignore american anime conventions and have no retail presence or localized anime sales in the US, oh wait.
>>
>>55254832
>nope.exe
but my country couldnt care less.
What i found though is the lack of big names torrent lately and i believe its not due to companies' copyright claims

>>
>>55255226
The Netherlands Or Romania
>>
>>55255206
It's more likely that it's the western affiliates. Japan cares only about Japan. Funimation and the rest are the ones that stand to lose cash over torrents and stream sites.
>>
I'm not dumb enough to use a piracy method that tells anyone in the entire world that connects to it that I'm using it.
>>
>>55255141
Pretty much EU.
Especially if it's claim from American company. ISPs have no obligation to act. From what I heard, if they receive the letter, they just put it into the garbage and move on.
It's legal to download, but not to distribute.
Considering how P2P works, they still can't put you in jail because you shared 175KB of movie with them.

And even with all of that the western market isn't even 10% of what they make off of their local market.

Are they trying to make presence outside of their local market? Yes
Is it currently as profitable as their own market? No

In Finland people have been sued for torrenting Black Sails, A Walk Among Tombstones, various porno flicks and Finnish pop albums.

No final decisions in court yet though as most seem to settle it out of court.

No one cares about Chinese cartoons though.

Not even once, and I have a few terabytes of shit.

Supposedly TPP will change this though.

There have been two times where my ISP actually cut off my internet for downloading two separate episodes of Bleach back in 2010. The ISP was COX so they obviously suck cock.

Japanese anime studios != localization companies
they dont pay that much for licensing Jap works, that's why they can afford to do it. Promotions like at cons are usually a mixed venture.
Most of the jap products are only here due to licensing and importers. Actual DVD/BD prices here are nothing like in Japan, $60 for a whole series is expected here, there they expect $60 for a BD with only like 2-4 episodes on it. Not only is the market not as big but individually westerners spend less even among more rampant fans.

>send email to ISP complaining about speed
>get free upgrade to 100mbps (12-12, 1MB/s)
>now I can torrent even faster
>1080p videos still don't stream flawlessly (like they should)
Why is this happening? I used to be able to watch 1080p with 30mbps. Might it be something else that's causing this?

Any first-world country aka West- or North-Europe.
>>
>>55255141
In the case of Sweden you just have to stay away from the big hollywood flicks, european or american music or anything swedish and somewhat new. Even those are a pretty long shot as the IP holders have to hassle themselves through courts only to never get their lawyer money back. Bittorrent cases other than running trackers are few and far apart. IP holders have sobered up a little and made it easier to actually get things legitimately.

Germany on the other hand has an Internet Gestapo that will automatically fine you for anything you've been spotted downloading that's licensed in Germany.
>>
>>55258783
streaming services try really hard to skimp on bandwidth, and not buffer too far ahead. I've had youtube do that. Problem is unlikely to be on your end or your ISP's end, its almost certainly to do with the place you're streaming from. Use youtube-dl.

anyway I torrented for years and then got a letter about porn. Threw it out, got a VPN, didn't get any more letters.
>>
>>55254832
I got a warning email from AT&T for using Popcorn Time.
>>
>>55259573
Streaming services have never restricted buffering because it doesn't change shit but it annoys the users a fuckload. Jewgle is the only company that thinks it's acceptable to do so.
>>
>>55258783
Bittorrent is multithreaded, so it uses many parallel tcp/udp connections, while youtube cdn use only one https connection.
Isp's network equipment under high load tend to throttle fastest connections first. So multiple slower connections give you better bandwidth then one.
You might check this with
>aria2c -x N http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test > /dev/null
where N is number of threads
