Decided to try FreeBSD for thefirst time - installed "FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE" on a Raspberry Pi.

> set the correct date/time
> want to install some basic software from ports, so ran # portsnap fetch

portsnap hangs with this message

any ideas what's wrong?

It's probably not hanging, portsnap is just really slow in general

send a SIGINFO (ctrl-T will probably work) and see if it's actually hanging or just slow
