The school district that my brothers are currently zoned to have eight ipads for every classroom. That includes Elementary, Middle and High School classrooms. In each classroom they also have eight dell netbooks.

It's just a push from hardware and software publishers to sell more shit. Buy a textbook, you're set for over a decade. Buy a laptop, you'll have to replace the whole damn thing every few years.
When I was in elementary school we had computer lab with OS9 macs and we did absolutely nothing but play with kid pix.

Literally this, my old HS had books from 2003 and got the new edition on 2013. They bought 500 History books at $250 each. They were all sitting in the bookroom because no one used them. Kids would just use the online edition if we even got homework assigned.
