OK OP, American working for a German company here. I know the US, I've been to Germany before, and I travel a lot.
First off, out of curiosity: What airport is this? I do not recognize the terminal.
Secondly: What airline did you fly, and what plane? Most Boeing 767/777 models have USB ports. You're German, so might I take a stab that you took a Lufthansa codeshare operated by United on an older, larger plane (namely, the Boeing 747) - maybe to Washington DC? Those planes don't provide inseat power, but have wifi and the entertainment is based on that. By the time you get to the US after a ten hour flight, your battery is depleted. Even if there were USB ports, if people used them non-stop to stream video from the wi-fi, older USB ports may provide power at less than an amp, meaning the devices will still discharge over time. Even if it wasn't united, the reasoning may be similar.
Secondly, you owe it to yourself to pick up a chinese battery pack when they go on sale on Amazon. In the US we can get 15000mah (1.5 times capacity of an iPad, roughly 5 full charges for most phones) batteries for $12.50 (10.99 EUR) shipped with no taxes (read: total price) when they're on sale. They're excellent for planes and airports.

Definitely for security, even with TSA Precheck. Walk through metal detectors have different calibration levels, and sometimes you'll be deferred for a body scan/pat down as a "random" thing (they basically program the metal detector to make an extra beep every 5-10% of the time). Having the shit in your bag makes the detector far less likely to trigger.
The phones are pretty easy, just make sure they're in a decently secured/padded location in case some screener mandhandles your bag (my iPhone 4S screen was cracked by a screener). If you don't want to divest your electronics to your bag, then the TSA has little bowls the size of a small plate you can put them in. Just make sure your pockets are empty. I wouldn't use the small bowls for a wallet - I prefer those are in my bag as most people won't steal an entire bag, a lone wallet in the open is more tempting.
Keys always go in the bag once I'm parked, not even in the airport. I have a clip in the front of my backpack for them so they won't fall out of my pocket somewhere away from home.
