Well is it? 120 vs 144? Getting a 1070 at 1080p.

What's this picture?
>>
>>55218665

homeless man watching porn on stolen laptop
>>
idk but I plan on blowing all my tendie bucks on a 1070 and a 1440p 144hz IPS monitor

everyone says it's way smoother than 60 hz and 1080p is too close to my current old monitor to justify upgrading
>>
>>55218680
the homeless are actually pretty avid mobile tech users. i could go dig up the literature on it, but the gist is that researchers have studied homeless people and found that they use laptops, smartphones, etc... as their primary means of getting connected, finding resources like food, etc...
>>
>>55218685
Im from 1366x768. Pretty sure 1080p is more than an upgrade
>>
>>55218685
Did just that last night. Shit's gonna be cash.
>>
>>55218709
exact same? which 1070 did you get?
>>
>>55218691
Link me the literature please.
>>
>>55218629
Going from 120 to 144 you wouldn't really notice a difference, going from 60 to 90+ the difference is huge.
>>
120hz vs 144hz difference is minute

Just get cheaper one if there is
>>
>>55218685
>>55218709

Which monitor specifically?
>>
>>55218726
Cant find monitors between 60 and 144. Its usually just those two locally.
>>
its a meme until you see it with your own eyes
>>
If you have a choice, 120 is better than 144 hz
>>
I'm actually trying to decide myself between the gtx 1070 or gtx 1080 for my new 144hz gsync 1080p monitor.

Obviously I'd be completely fine if I had only a 60hz monitor, but I feel like I wouldn't be using the g sync or 144hz to its full potential unless I am floating around 120+ fps in most games.

But the the gtx 1070 can only get about 85fps in the witcher 3, unless you disable settings like hairworks. (which I absolutely refuse to do because autism)
>>
>>55218821
Why?
>>
>>55218850
Media compatibility, nothing else.

120 Hz is a multiple of 24, 30, 60 and 120 Hz. 144 Hz is only a multiple of 24.

So for example, if you're ever watching 60 fps footage on youtube, it will look choppy on a 144 Hz display but smooth on a 120 Hz monitor.
>>
>>55218821
>>55218850
120hz is better than 144hz because unless you're using a g-sync monitor like
>>55218841

Then 60fps capped games will have an undividable frametime, which leads to micro stuttering.

at 144hz, you'd need to keep 72 to have your monitor display each frame twice.

If you dont do this, not only will it cause stuttering, but it will create input lag and other potential issues too.

This is why if I couldn't maintain 60fps in a game on my old 60hz monitor, I'd lock the framerate to 30fps.
>>
>>55218886
YouTube, browsers etc. are all far from having adaptive sync support. G-SYNC etc. only matter for games.
>>
>>55218901
g sync still has a purpose even if you're using your monitor in 120hz mode (which I am because ULMB is a feature in my monitor)
>>
>>55218871
>>55218886
Fuck son. What's a good 120hz monitor? Benq monitors?
>>
>>55218871
I guess im ordering online then
>>
>>55218932
You can just set it at 120
>>
>>55218932
Define ‘good’. What are you interested in?
>>
>>55218932
you just buy a 144hz monitor and set it to 120hz you fucking spook.
>>
>>55218932
Hey I'm this guy
>>55218841
I'm using this monitor because it was the cheapest
144hz g sync monitor on the market with solid reviews.

I can confirm that while it is a TN display, the view angles aren't an issue.

>>
>>55218886
144 is chosen as a multiple of 24
If you really want 120hz you can set a custom refresh rate

>>55218901
Adaptive sync/gsync doesn't matter for things like youtube, and the sync is not application dependent, its just between the GPU and the monitor.
>>
>>55218983
>and the sync is not application dependent, its just between the GPU and the monitor.
That's ridiculously oversimplifying things and also wrong
>>
>>55218988
Please enlighten us as to how you think Freesync/G-Sync work then
>>
you don't need to set a custom refresh rate
144hz monitors allow you to pick 144, 120, 100, 60
>>
>>55218960
Mostly AA titles. And some competitive e sports games. Will do video editing too.
>>
>>55218983
I don't know why you're telling me something I already know, but I'm just going to assume you accidentally replied to the wrong person.

I clearly just explained why you need to evenly divide your refresh rate in multiples to get an even frametime.
>>
>>55219005
Good to know that. I guess i'll be buying which ever is the cheapest best performance
>>
144hz is good. Vastly improves everything from simply browsing the internet to games. Once you see that instant response from your mouse and no dragging trails or blurry text even when moving a window around you'll wonder why the fuck people even use 60fps, and feel console players are subhuman.

Difference between 120 and 144 is hard to notice, but you can certainly tell. If you can get 144fps then get 144hz. Simple as that.
>>
>check monitor I wanted
>it's $50 off daily deal
>deal is over before I can even buy it

kill me family
>>
>>55219001
Adaptive sync basically works by the display rendering new frames when they've finished rendering (on-demand) instead of at fixed intervals.

>>55219010
I meant what display features. Please sort these by order of preference:

>Color accuracy
>Color range
>Brightness range
>Resolution
>Size (diagonal)
>Black levels
>Flicker-free backlight
>Response times (and overdrive preference)
>Refresh rate
>Input latency
>Firmware stability
>Panel uniformity
>Stand quality
>Off-center gamma stability
>Display coating
>>
>>55219081
Okay, and so how does that make it application dependent?
>>
>>55219100
Because it relies on the graphics stack (OpenGL / DirectX) being capable of signaling new frames to the compositor in charge of scheduling them for the GPU.

Apart from the necessary hardware signaling, it's entirely a software-driven thing. The application, graphics stack, compositor, graphics driver and display have to be working in sync.
>>
>>55218685
>1070
>1440p 144hz
For what purpose? Movies aren't over 60 FPS and there's no way you can pley geimus at 144 FPS with a mid range GPU.
>>
>>55219164
It's still smoother for e.g. dragging windows, scrolling or other non-game things.

And for videos, 120 Hz is better than 60 Hz if you're going to be locked to a single framerate. (Unless you want to be auto-switching framerates for the media, which only works well on adaptive sync displays)
>>
>>55219164
lots of benchmarks I saw were 80+ fps and games like csgo and overwatch should be a lot higher than that

I upgrade video card more often than monitor anyway

might get a 1080 if I can afford it
>>
i FUCKING LOVE 144HZ.
i can't game without it.
>>
Where's that screencap of all those idiots who only found the setting to switch their monitors from 60Hz to 144Hz after like a whole year of bragging
>>
>>55218629
I was getting triggered before reading it was about 120 vs 144 instead of just 144. Yes, in that case 144 is a big marketing meme, but they don't make new 120 ones. You can just go 144 if you don't have 120 or 144 already.
>>
>>55219164

>>
Any good ips +27" 144hz 1080 gsync monitors?
Seems like every ips monitor is 1440
>>
>>55220115
>27" 1080p
dear god, have you zero compassion for your eyes?
>>
>>55220030
Yeah but how often do you actually go into your monitor settings to set it to 60 Hz mode before watching a 30fps or 60fps recording?

Hence why I'm saying you should just set it to 120 Hz and then forget about it.
>>
I have a 144hz 1440 monitor. Can confirm everything is amazingly smooth, including just basic everyday use, moving windows and the mouse around.

Once you use it you'll never want to go back though, keep that in mind.
>>
>>55220319
Yeah but how often do you make a purchase of a shittier product based on nonsense?
>>
>>55218960
24" glossy (no ag) ips
>>
Yes. Warning though it will spoil your brain. I cannot enjoy 60fps anymore once I got a 144hz monitor.

True story, all my other devices look like dirt in comparison, after a day of starting at my monitor my phone seems super flickery for a few hours afterwards
>>
I can pick up 60 vs 120 at a glance. I cannot detect 120 vs 144 no matter how long I try.

For me the cutoff is around 100ish since I also can't tell my 100hz OC Korean monitor and a 120hz tn shit show but can pick up 60 vs 100 as fast as 60 vs 120

Wow what a dank bait
>>
>>55218629
It's not, but you aren't the top 0.1% of gamers that can even notice the difference so who cares. There may be a lot of fake 144hz monitors out there so beware.
>>
>>55221999
I got 20/20 vision. I'm not saying no one else can tell. Just saying I can't tell >100hz refresh.
>>
>>55218716
>>55218691
Interested as well
>>
>>55219164
1070 isn't a midrange card anymore.
>>
In all honestly im running 1080p 144hz and it is really amazing. However my kinda old GTX980 was able to push 2k at 144hz with only a few games needing settings changes. I would say get a GTX1080 and 2k 144hz monitor at 27 inches Acer makes a good one.
>>
>>55218685
Enjoy that input lag
>>
>>55220631
Note this display only has vga, hdmi, & dual link-dvi.
>>
>>55223480
Anymore?

1070 was never a midrange card and neither was the 970.
>>
>>55218734
but there's a good difference from 1 fps to 25 fps
>>
>>55223887
Using this cheap piece of shit at work. The HDMI doesn't support above 60hz either.
>>
I went from a HD7970+7950 with teeeeerrrriiiibbbblllleeee microstutter due to xfire on 1080p to a gtx 1080 on a dell s2716dg at 1440p and 144hz. Mindblowing difference, even for daily use as opposed to xtreem gayming

You could be homeless one day, will you forget how to use computers and phones?
Probably not.

Also, how much does a old laptop like that cost or a smartphone? Not even a two digit sum, so why wonder that homeless people use technology.
>>
>>55218629
just got 144 and ... not much difference
its still not fast enough to feel real life smooth, you can still see ghosting in fast movements and the rise from me setting it to 120 or 144 is impossible to tell
also the jump from 60 is that impressive
when you go from 60 to 30 you will instantly notice it
but from 144 to 60 not that much

also 144 colors blow ass
>>
>>55219842
>interpolation
"No"
>>
>>55218629
Wow, RMS lost so much weight. Good for him... Sadly he grayed out a bit. He's getting old...
>>
>>55227183

what kind of shitty 90's palette are you stuck on?
>>

Wasn't that OP's question?
